10 mo w/ Chest congestion, throwing up at bedtime feeding

My 10 mo old son has had a cold for about a week. It started as a severely stuffy nose and has now moved down to his chest.  He's not coughing much throughout the day, still has a bit of a runny nose (much better than earlier this week) and no fever and I nurse him 4 times a day. So, last night and tonight after nursing him at his bedtime feeding he has thrown up while he's tried to burp. Is this normal? He's eaten the normal things he usually does. I am assuming it's just all the congestion that's in his tummy mixed with the BM but if it's that I'm puzzled why it's only happening at bedtime and not other nursing times.  Any thoughts?

Also, I would love to give him something to help break up the congestion...any suggestions for a 10month old?

Thanks!

Aww Im sorry your LO isnt feeling well, but that sounds normal to me. For some reason congestion gets worse at night maybe elevate his head in the crib by putting some towels under the matress and try a humidifier, vicks vapor rub and johnsons vapor baths helps too.  Hope he feels better =)

I agree with PP.   Elevate the head of his bed.  Saline nasal solution helps.  Drop two drops in each nostril and use the suction bulb to suck it out.  I will warn you....he's not gonna like it!  It will help though.  You can also get something for congestion over the counter but I would recommend calling your ped and having them call you in some Accuhist.  That helps tremendously.

Also try using bm in his nose instead of the saline solution. It works great.

I am not sure how young you can do this, but for my 3 year old and my 7 year old I put Vicks on the bottom of their feet and cover with socks before bed, it seems to help them A LOT.  My 3 year old is going through this right now. She gets these huge mucus balls that she can't cough up on her own and she ends up choking on them and throwing them up. [Gross, I know..]

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I am actually 3 states away from home right now and had no humidifier...but broke down and bought one. I used the saline drops, suctioned his nose out (been doing this all along) and sat him in the bathroom with the shower running...then nursed him in there and it worked great!  No throwing up (yet!) Will try the vicks vapo rub on his feet when I get home.

Thanks again!

My son has been doing this on and off for a about 3 days. My mother recently got the flu and he was around her. I say it has stayed very minor whatever it is if its the flu or something esle he caught. Thank god for me breastfeeding because whenever he catches something its very slight and goes away quickly
