My twins have colds right now and are very congested. It seems to be very hard for them to nurse and I have to stop several times during a nursing session because they get strangled and I have to clear their noses out. So I have pumped a good bit and my husband gave them bottles of expressed milk. They gulped it down and were very satisfied. I know that drinking from a bottle is much easier, but if I let them take the bottle while they are not feeling well will I ever get them back to the breast?????
They very well could fight you if bottles are given over and over...I recommend making sure YOU never give the bottles, you make sure not to be in sight and only give it when you are not getting enough wet diapers because of nursing issues from the colds. Use your BM in a syringe or the thing used to clear noses and squirt it into their noses, this breaks up mucous and eases nasal congestion, works very well.
Congestion and bottles can cause ear infections, which in trun makes nursing even harder...just be careful...give as few bottles as possible
I had to give my DS a bottle after a 2 month long battle with thrush...the pain was just unbearable and I wanted to give my nipples a chance to heal. I only gave him bottles for a day and I never got him back on my breast again. I went to a LC for help and tried for 3 weeks, but he completely self weaned.
Have you put breastmilk in their noses? More effective than suctioning.
Well for my second baby I gave her a bottle for 2 months straight. From day one until 8 weeks. I didn't want to but I had soooo much trouble getting her to breast feed after a horrible pediatric nurse...
Anyways I could not take it anymore and put the pump away. I remember looking down at her and saying it is the boob or nothing. That was it. I'm sure that there was a bit of her fussing but I was serious. So 2 months of bottle feeding and then we went on to breast feed solely for another 10 months.
My third baby we had issues with getting her enough milk. she would fall asleep at the breast and never get enough...thus my supply started suffering. I switched from breast to bottle for two months (2 months to 4 months). At four months again I just got tired of pumping and formula feeding so we had a boobie only feeding fest where we didn't leave the bed except to potty and eat for 3 days. Didn't have another issue after that.
Yes we are using the breastmilk in their noses. Our pediatrician actually suggested it. It did help. I just finished nursing the smaller of my twins, she is the most challenging and has been since birth. She did better than earlier in the day today. It took about 40 minutes and she covered us both in milk but she ate til she seemed satisfied. This is the first time all day that she has taken just my breast. Her sister is still sleeping so we will see what she does. I am trying to stay up even though it is 3:30 a.m. just because I know she will be up soon to eat.
