She Won't Stop Puking

My daughter is one month old...she is a good nurser, she has been since birth. But lately she has been having issues! Her nose has been stuffy, we thought that was it. We thought it was just gas. Have tried everything for that. I am extremely frustrated. She pukes--and this is not mild puking. She gets very very upset, and vomits, with several heaves, and is extremely upset. My son sort of had this issue, but it was not near as bad, it was predictable with a pattern and was easily solved by replacing that feeding with a bottle of breastmilk with a little bit of cereal in it. Not only is this difference because of that, but I CANNOT give her a bottle period I have tried, and no one else is here to give her a bottle even if we could try that. I have tried to track what I am eating, and changing stuff doesn't seem to make a difference. I have tried gas drops, or tried to feed her before she gets upset...nothing seems to be the answer. Her one month appt is on Friday and I plan to talk to the doctor, but I just don't think I can wait long. I am getting very frustrated, I am exhausted, she is fussy all the time, doesn't stay asleep very well, so I am more impatient with her when I am not rested. I don;t know what to do! Does anybody have any ideas or advice? I have tried everything I know to do. And even if I wanted to cave and give her formula for fussiness and gas...she won't take a bottle from me!!! help!

It could be a dairy sensitivity on her part or a forceful/overactive letdown on yours. I would try cutting dairy out(really remember to read all labels, some dairy is hidden)...and google forceful/overactive letdown on www.kellymom.com and see if anything there looks familiar.

I would NOT do the cereal in a bottle thing. It's a choking hazard and could make things worse. Unless it's been prescribed/advised by a dr.

It really does sound like a food sensitivity. It takes weeks for it to completely get out of your system, you can continue to nurse during that time and you should gradually see a difference in baby. It could also be forceful letdown, but the thing that has me thinking it's an allergy is the stuffy nose you mentioned. Here's  link for both:

1. Keep her in a slightly upright position when she feeds.

2. Let her drink small amounts

3. Try letting her drink a little, then burp, then drink a little, then burp.

4. Absolutely no movement right after feeding since it comes up easily.

5. Make sure you're not eating onions, or spicy foods, try calm things like chicken soup, and lots of water.

Lastly, if she is puking so much and it has been for an extended period of time, it is very worrisome, she could be seriously sick, and if she's throwing up a lot, she's not getting the food she needs and she may be getting severely dehydrated. I would bring her in to the doctor next day and explain the situation. Lots of vomiting is a serious matter and can be life threatening.

Please update us and let us know how she does. Hope this helped.

Poor pumpkin!

Sounds like allergy or reflux.

I hope you can figure it all out asap. Poor little thing. Please update us!

She has been doing well today. I have given her gas drops 3x today, and have burped her extra, kept things calm, etc. She has been happier and her nose is less stuffy. I am wondering if a little part of the issue is because she a was a premie, my mom brought this up. She was heavy due to GD but she was 3 1/2 weeks early, so my mom wondered if her tummy is a little weak or something like that. A friend of mine told me that her daughter had food allergies and the dr just told her to switch to sensitive formula. My goal has been to nurse exclusively for 6 months without introducing anything else, because she will get the most breastmilk this way and was hoping it wouldn't cause early weaning like what happened with my son. Also, do any of you think a loose schedule would help?

If it's a dairy sensitivity eliminating all dairy from your diet(this takes 2-3 weeks at least to get dairy out of your system) will make sure you can avoid formula. If she has been doing better I would look into the forceful letdown link, but do look at the other link too. I wouldn't suggest a schedule, feeding on demand helps make sure you have a good supply of milk and that baby is getting all she needs.

I really don't think it's the case, if it were, she'd get sick EVERY time she eats because I drink milk and eat eggs and cheese almost daily. However I don't think I could ever rid dairy from my diet, it would eliminate almost everything that I eat! When you think about it, there's dairy in a LOT of things, baked goods and sometimes bread, etc, it would be almost impossible. It's day 2 of her doing well on the gas drops so I wanna say she is just swallowing a lot of air.

I hear ya. But if you do find that is the problem, some moms here have had to deal with that and have eliminated all dairy from thier diets. It is possible.
