I just had my little one on Nov 7th and am new to cafemom and in the past week he has went from an easy going guy to a fussy and high needs baby. I'm pretty sure he's going through a growth spurt-but just needed some extra support. It seems as though he will breastfeed from lets say 9-9:45 and then get hungry again at 10:15 or so. He also is not napping during the day because he's either hungry or has a wet or dirty diaper-needless to say it's next to impossible to get anything done or get any rest in. Is this normal or am I feeding him too much? Sometimes it's still hard for me to tell the difference between his cries and also if he is gassy he will sometimes want to BF to help self soothe. Also, is there any point in trying to get him on a schedule during the day at this time?
Love that they have this group on here!
You just described my daughter's first three months. She would nurse every 1.5 to 2 hours during the day, then as soon as evening would hit she would cluster feed and be on the breast almost constantly for about 3-4 hours.
Even now, at six months, she's still not much of a napper unless she's got the boobie. It was and still can be a little frustrating, but it is such a short period in their lives that you just have to give in to the experience and roll with it. If you're planning to EBF it's best to nurse on demand; it could affect your supply if you try to schedule. Hang in there!
The first few months can be pretty rough. My DD would nurse about 2 hours apart. And you have to remember that is from beginning of nursing to the beginning again. So not from when they are done to when they start nursing again. Sorry if that doesnt make sense. My DD did this thing called comfort nursing where she just wanted to be attached all the time. It hurt me SO bad. I finally gave in and gave her a binky which she didn't want at first. Now she uses it to sleep. It didn't seem to cause any nipple confusion, but then she nursed really well from the get go. If you are worried about nipple confusion I would hold off on that. And as far as the schedule, like the PP said, if you are going to EBF then demand is best for supply reasons. All I can do is hang in there. It will get better. My DD is 10 months now and nurses about 4-5 times a day, and usually for less then 10 minutes.
