I've been bf for the last 9 days. I went to see a lactation consultant on tues due to latching problems. She gave me a nipple shield to use and that was working great until thurs morning when she refused to use it. So I tried to get her to latch without it and it worked she did great the whole day. Yesterday I went back to the lactation consultant for a follow up and she's doing great. She's back to her birth weight and she was getting about 2oz from one side and almost another 1oz from the other. But today my nipples hurt so bad when she first starts sucking for a couple mins. When I take it out it looks like it should and it's not cracked or anything. I'm using lansinol but is there something else I can do to help?
I also pump after she feeds because she has a little jaundice and the LC told me to so that my milk supply will stay until she wakes up more to eat. My DH has given her a couple bottles of expressed milk though at night so I could get some sleep. Last night she was up everytime I'd lay down. I was up with her until 2am when DH had to take over I couldn't stay awake anymore. My milk seems to be watery when I pump so I'm wondering if she's getting enough hind milk. How can I make it more rich for her? I've been eating oatmeal cookies and trying to pump more often. If I pump more often will it help to increase my supply also?

She's back to her birth weight wow at 9 days..thats awesomeand she was getting about 2oz from one side and almost another 1oz from the other.wow thats alot at 9 days... But today my nipples hurt so bad when she first starts sucking for a couple mins. yep normal, as long as that goes away as she nurses thats fine..its nipples getting used to being used, the shield prevented that from happening before When I take it out it looks like it should and it's not cracked or anything.good signs I'm using lansinol but is there something else I can do to help? the soothie gel packs between nursings help too..give it time, your nipples will get used to it
I also pump after she feeds because she has a little jaundice and the LC told me to so that my milk supply will stay until she wakes up more to eat. hmmm jaundice happens and it can be fine and there for a while in BF babies, as long as it doesn't get too bad...if baby is getting 6-8 wet or messy diapers a day theres no need to pump to maintain supply, baby is doing that on her own My DH has given her a couple bottles of expressed milk though at night so I could get some sleep.be careful..bottles this early and skipping feedings can mean messed up latch, nipple/flow preference and lowered supply Last night she was up everytime I'd lay down. I was up with her until 2am when DH had to take over I couldn't stay awake anymore. then you lay down with baby and nurse and snooze...gotta learn to do that..its insanelt helpfu; My milk seems to be watery when I pump so I'm wondering if she's getting enough hind milk.pumps tend to get out foremilk and not as much hindmilk, she gets more hindmilk, BUT BM is watery, its over 80% water How can I make it more rich for her?no such thing, you BM is rich as it is..if you want it to be fattier then you want her to get more hindmilk..but her weights seem great so I don't think thats an issue I've been eating oatmeal cookies and trying to pump more often.why? supply is obviously NOT low If I pump more often will it help to increase my supply also?yeah it can but why do you think you NEED to raise supply? If baby is getting 6-8 wet or messy diapers a day baby is getting plenty of milk, shes back to birthweight before 2 weeks so obviously supply is NOT an issue, did someone tell you it is??
thank you the LC told me that due to her being extra sleepy because of the jaundice that I should pump after feedings to make sure she's emptying them. I have latch problems with her not wanting to open wide enough. She also told me that she should be getting between 21/2 to 3 oz each feeding. I didn't think it was possible to fatten teh milk. She has plenty wet and messy diapers. Thank you so much for your help. I have yet to get a hang of the laying down and nursing.

Thing is in the beginning you actually make MORE than enough milk usually and have an oversupply and if shes nursing enough to get the diapers and weight gain shes removing enough, by pumping you are actually going to cause an oversupply and that can cause weight issues.
Theres no should as far as each feeding..24-30 oz a day is the total amount for a 1 month old on...so even under that is fine for a 9 day old. At a week old the normal BF babies tummy is about 1-2 oz...it can vary one feeding can be 1/2 oz and the next 3 oz...theres not a steady amount for BF babies...odd a LC would say theres an amount she should be getting per feeding.
Laying down on my side with my arm to prop babies head helped me tons with night nursing...just gotta work at it a while.

ok well since I can figure out how to get what I wrote up... I will just add to what was said.
I agree, stop using nipple shields, it will cause more problems with latch. Stop pumpin, this will cause more problems as well, there is no need to pump, sounds like there is plenty of milk, adn the best way to get a good latch is to keep her at the breast... make sure she opens up wide to get a correct latch, and make sure your relaxed. If your areola is not showing and there is no pain that would be a good indicator of a good latch. did you LC show you how to get a good latch?
And as far as hind milk goes. the best way to avoid that is to nurse on one side until she's done and your soft. If you are engorged (roch hard filled with milk) you can hand express some milk in the sink or cup and then latch her on. the will make it easier for her to get a good latch and make sure that she gets more hind milk. Also, you don't want to leave your breasts engorged, it can lead to infection, so make sure that you relief your breast my hand expressing (do you know how to hand express?)
As far as wsleeping goes. The best way to insure you are getting enough sleep and she is getting satisfied is to sleep with her. There have been countless nights where I would fall asleep with my baby in my arms nursing because I was sooo tired, and so sleeping with her in bed will be the best way to fix the problem if you have no prolblem with her being in bed with you. If you learn to nursing while laying down that is ideal, and both of your needs get met.
