Does chocolate dry up breast milk?

My MIL smelled the smallest amount of chocolate on my breath and scolded me for eating a little bit of chocolate and proceeded to scold me and tell me that it will dry up my breast milk. I told her not to worry about it (I am so gorged it's not even funny.) But she felt it to take it upon herself to continue on. Again I told her not to worry about it and that baby was getting plenty of milk. I had GD and was very well behaved during my pregnancy but lost my will power and just wanted a lil bit of chocolate. (Since I'm no longer on diet restrictions.)

Have any of you heard about chocolate drying up the breast milk?

It has never dried up my milk but as in anything with caffeine it should be consumed in moderation.  I also drink Diet Coke (and tons of water).  I bet you MIL would not approve of that either.

Thats crazy talk lol!

If chocolate had that effect my kiddos would be in serious trouble lol. I've been nursing for over two years and never had any issues....and I have a definite sweet tooth. :)

I craved sweets (m&m cookies mostly) when I was nursing my youngest. It had zero effect on my milk. I know my MIL believes in all those "old wives tales" and had bouts with her about things too.

old wives tale, don't worry about it. there is no truth to it at all.

BTW, I have GD and cannot WAIT to have a snickers bar and a grape soda so I totally feel you on that one. I am glad yours went away. Cross your fingers that mine does too please :)

CRAZY WOMAN!!  NO in fact the hormones released by eatting chocolate are the same ones you get from being in love so I guess being in love would dry upi your milk too??

If it did, my poor baby would starve! No, that is absolutely ridiculous. Sounds like an old wives tale to me.

Mahalo Ladies! I knew that a little bit of chocolate couldn't hurt me or the milk supply. I think I may need to find a polite way to remind her that they now know more about breastmilk in the medical profession and alot has changed since she last had her child. (Which was over 40 yrs ago.) Oh the joys of having a MIL, lol!

Good Luck with that. I have to go in and get my test done in 5 weeks so I'm not really out of the woods yet, but is ok to have a little carbs & sugar here and there. Made DH bring me a cinnamon roll from Cinnabon the night after my LO was born, lol.
