Opinions on starting solids

So we had our 6 month check-up today. DS has several ongoing issues, one of which is reflux. And once again the healthcare provider, as many have done in the past told me I need to get him on cereal immediately. He has been exclusively fed breastmilk on the breast or bottle for the past 6 months.

I don't really like the idea of cereal. I kind of skipped it all together with my first DS, and went straight to veggies/fruits and occasional meat (for the iron). But I feel like I'm the wierdo, as my parents, in-laws, friends, sisters, daycare providers, healthcare professionals, pretty much everyone I know is a strong proponent that I need to get this boy on cereal to help his fussiness, reflux and his overall growth and development.

If I do start cereal I will be grinding my own oatmeal or brown rice. I am the mom who becomes ill on pre-natal vitamins with iron, so I just don't feel right giving my DS, who already has GI issues, iron fortified foods at this time.

Thoughts??? Or any known research on the subject????
