My son turned one Jan 16th. We have pretty much weaned. He only nurses to go to sleep now. I weaned because I am selfish and wanted to have some time not nursing before the newest LO arrives in July. He did not put any weight on between his last doctor appointment and his one year. We are going back for a weight check on the 24th. Doctor just called today and said his blood work came back and he is anemic. : ( I feel like a failure. I feed him all day. Healthy, good food. Lean meats, cow's milk (he does well with it and loves it), cheese, lots of water, fruits, veggies, whole grain breads and cereals (rice chex). No junk food, except MAYBE a pizza crust every now and again. I am worried that he hasn't put on weight since his appointment on the 24th and extra worried because he was anemic. Has anyone faced this? What can I do to be a better mom? If this is not the appropriate group for this, let me know, I will find somewhere else. We have EBF this whole year, not a drop of formula. I really value you ladies and you are always are so knowledgeable.
Can you go back to nursing? That might help the weight gain. I know you're tired & wanted a break before the baby, but it might be what's best for him until he has a better appetite for solids. Nurse at least 3x a day. No need to nurse first now before solids.
Avacadoes, olive oil (dip bread in it, cook with), are fats and meats, beans etc have iron.
Also oranges and other citrus will help with iron absorption.

Anemic? Lower his dairy intake. Contrary to popular belief toddlers dobt need dairy, they need healthy fats. Too much dairy can cause anemia as calcium inhibits iron absorption.

He nurses twice during the day, before naps. Then, once right before bed. Then, once at night, he wakes up at two. Maybe, I should nurse between those times?

Good job making it to a year!

Okay. I didn't realize dairy was counterproductive. Thanks! : )

*nods* Okay. Thanks! He LOVES oranges. There is very little he DOESN'T like!

I agree with this. No more than 8-10 oz dairy a day including all cheese & milk.
Also oranges and other citrus will help with iron absorption.

I'll try. That is a good idea. He has really gotten finicky about nursing, since I became pregnant. I call him my pregnancy test! He knew I was pregnant two weeks before I could get a BPF! ; )

Can you offer when he gets up from the nap? Or as an after dinner drink? That could help.
