My ds and I have both been sick for 3 weeks now. Stuffy, cough, generally feeling crummy. I gave in an was seen by my local clinic. They took one look in my ears and said I had a massive infection. Great. So after trying to cure it myself with breastmilk I gave up after 3 days and got the antibiotics. My question is this- if I take antibiotics does that reduce the amount of antibodies I'm producing for him?? Now I'm worried and I am kicking myself for not thinking about this sooner. I know amoxicillin is pretty "safe" for breastfeeding, but with him being sick should I not take it?
Am I just over thinking this?
If the doctor knew you were BF, she would NOT give you anything that would harm the baby, yes a small amount will cross over in your milk, you didn't say how old baby was, if he/she is taking solid food, you might want to give him some yogurt. The bad thing about antibiotcs is they cannot difer between, good and bad bacteria, so you should eat some yogurt as well.
And keep an eye out for thrush - like pp said take some probiotics if you can
This is the ONLY comment that makes sense ur not OVER thinking it if ur concerned about ur baby i was hospitalized for breathin problem and after i got home my baby pooped like 8x a day and NO he wasnt sick he had no fever nothin it was ALL cuz of the meds they were giving me and They knew i was BF and said they "think" they should be safe read MissJeanne plese!

Drug Levels and Effects:
Summary of Use during Lactation:
Amoxicillin is acceptable to use during breastfeeding. Limited information indicates that single maternal doses of amoxicillin 1 gram produce low levels in milk that are not expected to cause adverse effects in breastfed infants. Occasionally, rash and disruption of the infant's gastrointestinal flora, resulting in diarrhea or thrush, have been reported, but these effects have not been adequately evaluated.
I'd ha ve NO issues here. The risk of you suffering damage to your hearing from an ear infection is far greater and far more serious than the risk of baby pooping a lot.
Oh wow. Thank you ladies. The only reason why I was concerned was because he is sick too. No fever, but runny stuffy nose and a cough (probably from post nasal drip). I don't believe in antibiotics in the first year for baby unless there is something REALLY wrong. He needs to build up his immunities naturally (even though I'm a pansy and got the drugs for myself). But part of him building up his immunity comes from antibodies that I produce with my milk and I was concerned that my taking antibiodics would reduce the amount of antibodies he is getting so he can get better too.
I'm still doing BM in the nose and suctioning him out.
