Hi im new and joined to see if I could get help. My daughter is one week old and when I had her I wasn't producing alot of colostrum..almost none and my dd would get frustrated. So the nurses advised to wait till my milk came in and feed her. Problem is..when it came in... She had nipple confusion!! She puts the nipple in her mouth but not the areola!! I've been just strictly pumping BC I don't want to stress her..i can't. I just need to know what to do...so I don't give up..is there hope?!
HEY MOMS IVE BEEN TRYING THIS NIGHT TIME LATCH SESSION FOR DAYS AND STILL NO HOPE..AND IM STILL PUMPING EVERY FOUR HOURS OR LESS. ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS?!

Nursing is not really a natural act, for mom and baby. (Believe it or not) it takes practice :) just keep trying! "Shape" the breast if you have to by flattening it so she has an easier time getting more in her mouth. :) try try try! Before you know it she'll get the hang of it.

I am so sorry you did not get good advice! Colostrum is supposed to be in a small amount. I'm sure you were making the right amount. Newborn's stomachs are the size of MARBLES, so what you were making was plenty for her. That's also the really good stuff.
But that's in the past now, so let's move on. It's ok for baby to be frustrated and it's going to happen if you want to correct this. Have a nurse-in. Stop pumping, ditch the bottles, and get in bed with her. Strip her to her diaper and you go topless. Make sure you have water, snacks, whatever you need, and stay in bed for a couple days doing skin to skin and nursing.
Nurse on demand. When she's hungry, she eats. Let her come off on her own, even if that means she's on there for an hour. Offer the other breast after she comes off, but if she doesn't want it, then she's done. Just start with that side next time. Use lanolin after every feeding to help with sore nipples.
And she will be fussy. That's how newborns are. Behavior is not an indicator of whether or not she's getting enough. ONLY diapers are. She's a week old, so now you will be looking for 6-8 dirty diapers per 24 hours, wet and/or poop. Put 4 tbsp of water in a diaper and see how that feels - that's one diaper. So if it's full of pee, that counts as two. Poop counts as two because there's usually pee in it too.
Just keep working at it. She WILL eat. Babies instincts will not let them starve. And check out the stickies (yellow highlighted posts) at the top and kellymom.com for info. If you can sneak a book in, read So That's What They're There For.

Exactly. Stop pumping. Just put her on and to the person who said its not natural.. yes it is. Op just put that baby skin to skin if you can and she will figure it out. Its called the kangaroo method. Ive nursed my dd for 2 years and currently nursing ds for the last 13 months. He exclusivly bf for the first year.

Google latching videos- they are helpful!! And call your lactation consultant and Go in to see them. And keep trying. And ditch the bottles!
Oh- and w my ds- as soon as his mouth opened all the way I jammed his head on, felt like I was smothering him in boob- but he latched lol

Ditch bottles until she gets it? I will be going back to work in a few weeks (6 weeks) so doesn't she need bottles too?
And i have a three year old as well...so i can't just stay in bed for days...can we just do it at night?

Even though yuo are going back to work she doesnt NEED bottles now. Theres no practice needed. Bottles are easy. YOu know now she knows how to use them...they are not like a use it or lose it thing..thats more the breast. Find a local IBCLC, WIC has them for free. The nurses lied to you and I am pissed they did this to you.

You need to establish your supply or you'll see a big problem when you go back to work - every time you give a bottle you need to pump to tell your body you need that feeding. But baby is most efficient at expressing milk and will get far more out of you than a pump ever will. The antibodies and other benefits received are also highest directly from the breast.
So no more bottles until you go back to work. And when you do go back go work, nurse as often as she wants when you're home. Also make sure you avoid overfeeding. Bottles should not be more than 3oz ever, and she only needs 1-1.5 oz per hour you're away.
