Quoting Angeldolphine:babysitter?
Quoting whatmynameagain:
That's what I thought too. I am not about to start any baby food until maybe 6your months or older.and I'd never heard if taking iron. From whatvi be learned breast milk provides all babysitter need. That's why it threw me off so much.
Quoting Angeldolphine:Wow, your doctor thinks you need to introduce food at three months???? You have a stupid doctor then...
No, wait until six months like the WHO recommends. He obviously knows nothing about breastmilk. It provides 100 percent of nutrition for a YEAR (except Vit. D, because the baby needs to go outside). Introducing food now will interfere with the gut flora which helps your baby not get as sick. Besides that food particles can get into the bloodstream as the gut is permeable. Also, digestive enzymes are not at adult levels until 8-9 months, which is why a lot of babies get constipated.
As for iron, fortified iron from supplements or cereal actually interfere with the absorption of iron from your breastmilk. So no, don't give it to them! It's not needed and will actually cause more problems.
Find a new doc - not because of the iron thing, but the food thing. AAP (and several other organizations) recommend no food until 6 months.
Iron supplement is not needed - it actually inhibits the absorption of the iron in your milk. Which means it hurts, not helps.

my Doc described adding supplements to babies as a FAD, kind of like years ago adding vitamin E to your diet was supposed to help and prevent certain things, its the same concept and its not needed because they are finding years later health issuse with adding unnecessary supplements...if someone asked if i had added anything i felt justified with that information to say yes just to shut them up and did what i thought was best
