My LO is 4 1/2 months and I am exclusively breastfeeding...When my LO was 1 month old, he would only poop about once a week. The Pediatrician didn't have a concern for it because he said my baby was just taking in all the nutrients and didn't have any waste. But my son soon developed a sensitivity to lactose, so I switched to soy milk. Once that happened, he began pooping every 2-3 days. At my LO's 4 month check up, the Dr said my LO's digestive system is matured, and I could go back to drinking milk and having dairy. Since then, my son has only pooped once in the last 9 days. He doesn't have any uncomfortable moods and has plenty of wet diapers. If he goes 14 days without a dirty diaper, I'm going to call the Pediatrician.
Is this a normal experience with other moms and babies? Should I be really concerned?
Yes, my LO is exclusively breast fed. I understand that EBF babies dont poop as much, it's just that he hasn't gone this long without a BM ever. However, today when I changed his diaper he had a small spot of poop, so I think he may have a BM soon. I was also thinking of switching back to soy milk to see if that causes him to have more frequent BM's. If he does, I'll just combine milk and soy to get both the nutrition but also the BM's. Hopefully it'll all work out!
As long as baby's belly isn't hard and when baby poops it's not dry pellets, baby is fine. Breastmilk is really THAT perfect a food that there's just no waste many days. True constipation in an exclusively breastfed infant is almost unheard of, but not pooping for an extended period regularly IS common.
Group record is 20 days.
Be prepared for a blowout.
Well
ladies, this morning after breakfast my son surprised me with a LOAD of
a diaper! :) He just was saving all his waste for one morning where I
wouldn't expect it. lol He's as happy as can be, and didn't complain
while passing his BM. I've got a happy healthy boy and thank you for all
the advice! Happy motherhood!
