So the dr wants me to supplement formula because he only gained one ounce since last week. The dr says they loose weight in the first 6 days & then they are supposed to gain 3/4 of an ounce to an ounce per day after that. He was born at 7 14 & on one week visit he was 7 3oz & now he's only gone up to 7 4oz in 7 days. I do not want to give him formula, I wanted to strictly breastfeed, one reason is because if I give the bottle now, he may not want to breastfeed much longer because he will have to work harder for the milk, the other reasons are just my own personal reasons & similac having a recall a few months ago doesn't help any. Has anyone had this issue? Any suggestions? I'm just feeling really discouraged right now. Thanks.
Ok so I took the advice of everyone & of my friend who is a Doula. She also helped me to visualize how much breastfed babies should be eating by showing me some stuff on kellymom.com. I increased his feedings- some were every hour or so, & nixed the pacifier for now.
Took him back for a weight check today. He didn't gain any weight, still at 7lbs 4oz. Soooo the dr askse did he take the formula, etc, which I lied & said yes that I gave him around 1/2 ounce. She said give him 1-2ounces per feeding (that's sooooo much for his marble-sized stomach!! :/ ) & first she wanted to see him back on we'd, then she changed it to tomorrow. IF HE DOESN'T GAIN AT LEAST 1/2 ounce, SHE GOING TO ADMIT HOM TO THE HOSPITAL! :'(
So obviously I have to give him the formula now. After I went thru this whole explanation to my bf on why we are NOT giving him formula. I didn't tell him about the weight check cuz he would just freak out & make the situation worse. Anyway now hes asking why am I giving him formula. I hope the baby gains so I don't have to deal with the whole hospital thing :'(
