Denied Breastfeeding!!! Soft as a Grape store in Mashpee, Cape Cod, MA
My family and I are vacationing staying in Cape Cod area. Earlier today we were visiting Mashpee Commons and doing some shopping. My 3 and half month old daughter wanted to eat and I went into the first store I could find, Soft as a Grape in Mashpee Commons. I asked the woman working there if I could use a dressing room to breastfeed my daughter. Her reply to me was that I could go to Gap (on the other side of the shopping plaza) and use the Breastfeeding Room there. (It takes her almost a total of 5 minutes to nurse, it would have taken much longer with a screaming upset baby to get to the other side and a 3 1/2 year old in tow). I am quite upset by this and I do not want it to happen to someone else. I am nursing my daughter solely, and I nursed my son for over 14 months. I am not new to this and I know there are laws out there protecting breastfeeding mommas. Specifically Mass. Gen. Laws Ann. ch. 111 § 221 (2008) allows a mother to breastfeed her child in any public place or establishment or place which is open to and accepts or solicits the patronage of the general public and where the mother and her child. It's disappointing that in 2012, the difficulty of breastfeeding our children in public, even after the cover of Time that was released only in May. I don't know if anything can be done, but I would like to spread the word since there are many women who stop due to difficulty or lack of support they receive when nursing in public. Thank you for your time and I appreciate any assistance that can be offered.
