Jaundice & Breastfeeding HELP

My sister in law just had my nephew last Thursday. They told her he had jaundice but let them go home 2 days later. He went to the doctor yesterday to check his levels and they were high the first time so they checked him again today. They told her if it's still high tomorrow when the get the results that she will have to stop breast feeding and formula feed instead! Has any one experienced this? Is it true that it's better to stop nursing? Or are the doctors full of crap? Any advice appreciated. Thanks

No, she does not have to stop BF. She DOES need to find a good lactation consultant to help baby get latched as well as possible to get as much milk as possible. Levels in the teens aren't awful. As they get higher, I'd do a bili blanket if needed. But no no no interrupting BF!

Any advice to use formula over breast milk is CRAP. ( certain exceptions. ) please encourage her to nurse near a window. Lots of natural light will help. She can ask to use the light blanket thingamajig. True breast milk can take awhile to to come in but rarely is it actually a deficient supply. please contact La leche league. Besides having actual fact based information to help with all the issues of breast feeding. It's a great way to meet other moms. We're not all judgey placenta eaters. Lol. Some. Most not. A lot of LLL leaders are leaders because they were given bad advice from Dr.s and later regretted it. Lots of luck to her and her son. Congrats. Good for you for asking for advice. Thats crap.

DD2 was a little jaundiced at her one week check up.  Ped never said a thing about discontinuing bfing.  He told me the best thing for it was to feed often because the waste will go out with the poop.

My pedi was worried about dd's jaundice levels at 4 days old and told me to nurse as much as possible and get her into the sun. We did this for three days and her levels dropped so much the doctor called the lab to double check their numbers! :-)

This doesn't make sense. What kind of doctor recommend that.

My youngest also had jaundice. They, especially my mid-wife urged me to breasfeed as much as possible and to put him under the sun. Not directly but behind glass (window). Some does put the baby directly under the sun in the morning when the sun is not too strong.

I also drank some herbs tea to help my baby got rid of the jaundice.

My ds is STILL jaundice at 2 months but it has been lowering gradually.. my doc said breastfed babies tend to stay jaundicw longer but its nothing of concern and to CARRY on breast feeding as its the best thing..

What the hospital told me about ds was this: breastfeeding has our billi in it, that our body is getting rid of, as well as processing their own to get rid of, they also have to get rid of theirs...but if it is not hIgh enough to offer bili lights, it is probably just aesthetic at this point.
