hand, foot and mouth disease

My dd, 1, may possibly have hand, foot and mouth disease. I'm taking her to the dr tomorrow after my dh gets off work to find out if it is or not.

If she does have it, since she is still bf, will she possibly pass it on to me?

My ds had it at about 14 months, I didn't catch it and he was still nursing quite a bit. When it was going around none of the parents were catching it just the little ones, so maybe it's just a small child thing? I'm not a 100% though so bump!

more than likely you have had it before, as a young person. My daughter had it a few months ago.

HFMD usually affects infants and children, and is quite common. It is moderately contagious and is spread through direct contact with the mucus, saliva, or feces of an infected person. It typically occurs in small epidemics in nursery schools or kindergartens, usually during the summer and autumn months. The usual incubation period is 3–7 days.

It is less common in adults, but those with immune deficiencies are very susceptible. HFMD is not to be confused with foot-and-mouth disease (also called hoof-and-mouth disease), which is a separate disease affecting sheep, cattle, and swine (both are caused by members of the Picornaviridae family, but are not trans-communicable between Humans and livestock).

There is treatment for the rash. Creams to relieve the itch. Just know that all sores contain the virus. And also, an infected person spreads the virus through fecal matter for up to ONE YEAR from infection. So be diligent about cleaning to keep other little ones from getting it.

Where are you getting the one year thing from? I have heard a few weeks/month, but never a year!

Webmd is where I read it, I do believe. We had an outbreak recently in our little town so there were lots of moms talking about it with one mom whose children had it and she said that's what the dr told her too. It may only last weeks or months but there is a possibility it could last for up to one year.
