Away from EBF baby for 8 days...

I am required to go out of state for training for work and have to leave my baby with my parents while I am gone. I have no more stored BM as I am a teacher and off for the summer- so I have been feeding and not pumping. (I know- I should have thought ahead and pumped more...) However, my now 81/2 month old baby will be bottle fed formula while I am gone. I have given him a few bottles recently to get used to it and to make sure that he could handle it okay. He does. Which is both good and sad.

My questions are:

1. Do you think he will wean completely from my breast while I am gone?
2. Will I be able to retrain him to my breast when I get back?

3. If I lose some og my "volume" of milk production, will it come back?

4. Since I had originally planned on EBF for 6 months, should I just wean him off BF?

5. I plan on pumping while at the conference but I am going to be 20 hours away and in conference 8 hours a day in a classroom. No access to refridgerator until after 4 pm every day. Will a cooler in my car be enough to keep it cool until I get back to the hotel to freeze it? Or pump and dump?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me!

I have no experience with this, so here's a bump for you!

1 mom liked this

I used to be a road warrior in my nursing dayds, traveling for business for ten days at a time. Nursed to 26 months. It seriously was no big deal.

Meh. Shoulda woulda coulda... never mind.

Fine.

Which is both good and sad.

My questions are:

1. Do you think he will wean completely from my breast while I am gone?

Mine didn't.

2. Will I be able to retrain him to my breast when I get back?

Didn't have to. Here's the thing... NO bottles when mom is home... not one. Don't worry about geting baby used to a bottle. Indeed, skip bottles. Sippy cup. He's MORE than old enough and actually has been from birth. Bottles are never needed. They're just a short cut.

3. If I lose some og my "volume" of milk production, will it come back?

Always. You will need to take pump breaks. One for each missed feeding.

4. Since I had originally planned on EBF for 6 months, should I just wean him off BF?

Whatever for? When are you leaving? You need 24 ounces for each day. If you pump once a day from now till the time you leave, you may well have a day or two of milk.

It's fine to use formula for the shortfall. No need to wean. Absolutely none.

5. I plan on pumping while at the conference but I am going to be 20 hours away and in conference 8 hours a day in a classroom. No access to refridgerator until after 4 pm every day. Will a cooler in my car be enough to keep it cool until I get back to the hotel to freeze it?

That's perfect. Milk keeps at room temp for ten hours. I was on a trade show floor for ten hours a day. Never threw out one drop. Shipped it back via fedex.

Or pump and dump?

Delete that phrase from your vocabulary.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me!

Relax. It's honestly not that hard to do. Start pumping one side while nursing the other for all your feeds. No, it doesn't take away from the baby. Store it.

Scope out where you can get your hands on dry ice and ship milk back via FedEx while you're goine.
