Help with nursing while laying down..

Dd is 7 weeks old, she is still waking every 2 hours to eat, but goes right back to sleep when she's full. Lastnite we tried bedsharing so I could get a little more sleep, but I couldnt get my breast angled right. Seems I have to push down on my boob but lift my nipple upwards for it to reach her mouth. Any advice on how to make this position more comfortable for us? I ended up taking her out of the bed and feeding her on the chair all night. Dh will be moving her crib next to our bed- and taking the side down(its a convertiable crib)so we each have our own space
But don't want to rearrange our how bedroom if I can't nurse comfortably in bed. Thanks ladies

Oh! One more thing: have baby as close to you while nursing as well; skin to skin is very important, for when baby falls asleep. Should baby wake up again, they can find your nipple more easily, allowing you to stay asleep, or not have to fully wake up. I co-slept with all of my 4 kids, and this was a life saver, especially with my youngest, as she didn't sleep much at all.

Good advice. I co-slept and breastfed with my two and it made all the difference in the world....I could actually get sleep, the babies got fed and I could wake up in the morning much happier. Just keep trying and practicing and you'll find a comfortable way to do it!  :)

1 mom liked this
When he was super tiny I had him on a small blanket that way I could just sit up and slide him over, then face him the correct way of course, and as he got older, I got more confident that he wouldn't break, lol, and would just scoop him up and roll over top of my body. The LC at the hospital taught me about the receiving blanket, trick that made ALL the difference!! I think I used it until about 3-4ish months, or until he started to naturally roll onto his back.
Also when I got it down pretty well, I got to where I could roll a little forward and offer both sides without turning over.
I still do this all the time now.

This sounds like something to try! Do you have to roll over and set up again for the other breast or can you prop pillows to do the top one?

Are you pushing your boob down so that it doesn't cover your DD nose?
That's what I was doing at first, but now if that happens I just adjust his head so that its back a little more. Like his chin is more into my boob and his forehead is further away. Hope that makes sense!
I just put a pillow behind me to lean against in order to get my nipple in his mouth. Otherwise, I would have to lift my nipple too.

I have a small pillow I lay on my side with. Good luck. This is his favorite way to nurse :)

Thanks all for the great advice! We will start practicing and make this work!!! I can't be a zombie anymore! While she falls right back to sleep it takes me along time, so the next time she's almost waking up is when I doze off again!

The one tip I can give you is don't try and feed with the one closest to the bed, at least it is a bad angle for me. I use the one furthurest from the bed then we rool over for the other side. I hope that makes sense. Also, it is harder to get us both positioned just right!!

I can't side nurse.....my boobs are too big and I have to hold them to nurse. This is how I nurse laying down. I have a pillow on either side of me so support my arm. You basically start with the cradle hold, then lay down and turn babys body so you are tummy to tummy. This way you can go to sleep and baby won't choke. I watched a video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bLDwtb4EsM

This is what I do with a pillow to prop me up just a bit.

Hmm...this might sound weird, but I think I arched my back a little and we did just fine. I did like to have pillows behind me or my dh to sorta lean on. Good luck

I have to kind of lean towards my little one while pulling her legs/lower body as close to me as possible while her head/shoulders are slighty pulled away from me, leaving room to latch and breathe.  There is kind of a small "v" shape  between us - if that makes sense.

I had the hardest time with this too! I finally figured it out a few months in. lol. What we did, i lay on my side, have her pulled up close to my side (laying on her side) and position her slightly below my nipple so her head was tipped up a little to eat. (her problem was not being able breathe cuz her nose would be pressed up against my skin) Sometimes i'd prop her up on a firm pillow or rolled up blankets so she'd be up high enough as well as rolling more towards her.

I got the hang of sitting up propped with pillows and having her on a boppy too so i could doze. Just gotta keep practicing!! You'll get it soon!
