What breastfeeding tips have you found the most helpful? What tip would you share with new breastfeeding mom?

Today starts a two day world wide Latch On event to bring awareness to breastfeeding. Here are some  quick tips  for ensuring a good latch:

  1. Pay attention to the position of your nipple; your baby's nose should be near your nipple to get a deep latch
  2. Experiment with different holds to see if your baby latches better with a different position
  3. Some moms have improved their baby's latch by using a nipple shield
  4. Have your pediatrician check your baby for tongue tie
  5. Always discuss breastfeeding issues with your pediatrician or a lactation consultant

The best advice I have is make sure you drink plenty of water and eat a well balanced diet throughout the day to keep your milk supply up. If its diminishing, up your diet and try and feed more frequently and or pump after every feeding (or pump 2 to 3 times more) to let your body know there is more of w demand for milk. A couple days Will do it and the milk Will flow better, just be patient and trust it Will work even when it doesn't seem like it over the course of those 2 days.

The best advice I got came before my baby was even born.  I was told that rarely does it just come naturally and easy.  This may seem like a bit of downer advice, but it was very helpful to me.  I went into it not expecting it to come easy.  We had a real rough start, so if I went in expecting it to be easy, I would have been even more frustrated than I was.

I have never had any problems nursing my babies. The advice I give the most is "don't give up easily, you and baby have to learn how to do it" and "do what you feel is best for your baby"

i think the best advice is to stand in a warm shower when your breats are super engorged and painful. also, to put some nipple cream on right before ur child with teeth latches on, i have found that it hurts a lot less if she bites.

Gently caress around their head until you find their "spot". I gave birth to boy/girl twins and found her's between her eyebrows and his at the top of his ear. Any time they wouldn't grab on all I had to do was rub those spots and they latched right on.
