DS is having surgery in the morning :( SECOND UPDATE
My 8 month old is having surgery on his eye at 6 am. I'm obviously worried sick, he has to be put completely out for the procedure. But I'm also dreading the morning because poor baby can't eat after midnight tonight :(
He wakes every day, like clockwork between 4:30 and 5 am , nurses and goes right back to sleep. Now tomorrow morning I can't let him nurse :( . Has anyone else had to go thru this? What did you do to soothe baby? He doesn't take a pacifier either so that won't even work to help soothe him.
Also, dr said all he can have for the first few hours after he wakes up is water?? I've never given him water .
I was under the impression water was not good for BF babies?
Thank you ladies so very much for your advice and guidance. Kole's dr this morning stood firm and said no nursing for an hour!!! I then went to the anesthesiologist , a woman with 2 kids thankfully and she said " absolutely, as soon as he is awake you go right ahead and nurse him, I nursed my son less than 20 minutes after he had surgery. Even if he doesn't actually drink it will comfort him" YAY for her!!
He is now home and a little disoriented but resting comfortably with a nice FULL BELLY!!! :) surgery went great :)
Thank you all for your support! Unfortunately after he came home to recover he had to be admitted to the hospital due to an ongoing high fever and what they believe is another bacterial infection. We have been in since yesterday and no luck breaking his fever as of yet :( BUT.......he is nursing like a champ even with his nose and eye all bruised and swollen from his surgery!! ;)

Does the doc know hes breastfed? We were allowed to bfed (nothing else) until 4-6hrs before procedure b/c breastmilk digests so quickly. I guess its too late to check now though.
My oldest had surgery at 9 months it wasnt fun fasting but it was survivable . We had fasting procedure appts once a week from 13-16 months. It sucked but we lived.

I may be wrong, but I've always thought and been told that breast milk counts as an acceptable clear liquid. Good luck with the surgery. Praying for your little man.

Oh and BM is considered clear fluid. We were allowed nurse as soon as he was out of recovery. Does doc have bfing knowledge?

1 mom liked this
This is going to sound silly.
My nephew had to have surgery on his eye about that age.
The hospital gave him a vanilla soothe paci (they had them there though) and dipped it in sugar water. Idk if your ds can have that? But my nephew wasnt bfing either.
Sorry i cant really be of help

Water won't hurt him and it will fill his stomach. You can also give him a bit of Glucose Water (enfamil has it) on the tip of a paci and I can almost promise you that he will suck on it. My son had never had one and is EBF but he not only took it it made him much calmer. :)
Good Luck with surgery and give him lots of love. You and yours are in my thoughts.
Yup, told him repeatedly that DS is breastfeeding and couldn't I just nurse him a little ? They said nothing at all after midnight :(
Wow!! Fasting appts for 4 months ? I'd go nuts! Hope everything is ok now!

BM is clear liquid and can be given up to 4 hours before surgery! When my son was 6 months old, he had kidney surgery and was allowed to nurse 4 hours before!

I don't think he does. At least thats the vibe I got, everything happened so fast today though, we went from the pediatric appt to being sent to the pediatric Opthamology surgeon in a span of about an hour so my head was kind of spinning ( and in a total panic of course) . But I kinda got tge feeling he really wasn't to knowledgeable about BF. he wanted to schedule the procedure for this afternoon but when I told him he had already nursed 3 times this morning (it was 10am) he seemed very surprised and asked if he always eats that much??
