So I had my third baby on July 31st. I haven't been able to breastfeed my older two. I didn't try with my oldest and with my middle son he dropped so much weight that I ended up switching to formula.
So now with my third son I thought we were doing well. Everything was going good. He was having the right amount of dirty diapers and had gained some weight. But all of a sudden it seems like I have no supply or he's just not getting the milk. He weighed 6 lbs 13 oz at birth and when I weighed him today he's 6lbs 2 oz. That's down even lower than 3 or 4 days ago when I weighed him. He's constantly fussy and will only nurse for 5 to 10 minutes at a time. It doesn't even seem like he's swallowing anything. I don't hear anything. Oh and his diaper output is definitely down too.
I'm at my wits end and don't know what to do. I want to actually succeed this time but I'm ready to go to formula because I'm scared for him to drop more weight. Is there something I should be doing that I'm not? Any advice? Tips?
Where are you weighing him? If it's a home scale, ignore all the data. Home scales are notoriously inaccurate; I can get three different weights on a home scale in five minutes, without making ANY changes except stepping on and stepping off.
With a birth weight of 6/13, I wouldn't expect him to have even hit 6/8 just yet... week one is loss week, gain starts at a rate of 4-6 ounces per week in week two. You're in the middle of week three.
And all of that is presuming it was a vaginal birth.
How many dipes? A wet = 4 tb water poured into the dipe. You should also be seeing two quarter sized poops a day.
I'm not concerned about not hearing swallows. I never heard a single swallow in 26 months. Not ONE.
