posterior tongue tie clipped - update with issues

Finally, after 7 weeks and 3 pediatricians and 1 ENT saying no, there was no TT, I saw Dr Laura Brown in Cary, NC, who said yes he was tied and she would clip it right then and there! So I said let's do it, and he was clipped last Thursday!

I am still pumping and now we are nursing about half of time, slightly more. His latch isn't perfect, but he can actually latch now which is great. It gets better every time he eats.

I'm worried though that I shouldn't still be able to pump as much as I can afterwards. I can still pump 3+ oz after he eats. I used to pump 3.5-4 every 2 hrs. Last night was the first night we nursed on demand all night and when I woke up I fed him and pumped 6.75 oz. How is that possible?

I DO have an oversupply because I was EPing. I am not ready to let it regulate yet because I worked so hard to get this far. But I really don't know that he is eating enough because I'm not sure he is effectively removing the milk yet. One of the things that happens with TT babies is they fall asleep at the breast and that's often why they don't gain weight, because they don't get enough. I'm concerned when he falls asleep it's not that he is full, because I can still pump a normal amount.

Basically...what I'm trying to say is
Most people say "I don't have enough milk" because they only remove .5-2 oz with a pump. I'm concerned he isn't getting enough at the tap because I'm pumping "too much" afterwards.

Insight?? I wish I could do a few feed weights but so far we aren't able to see a pedi because we aren't vaxing. Maybe I'll have to rent a baby scale to ease my fears!

Sounds like maybe your body is over producing to make up for the milk he is eating and for the milk you're pumping?
Im thinking it will regulate. How are his diapers? Does his tongue hurt where they clipped it? Its not swollen is it?
Im just trying to find reasons he may not be eating alot at one time.

Your body is simply keeping up with the "demand", it is not a sign that baby is not getting milk at the breast.

When he starts to fall asleep do breast compressions to try and h=keep him going longer and take more milk. Squeeze the breast and you should see him respond to the increased flow of milk with more sucking/swallowing.

How many times is he nursing in 24 hours? How about ding a tiral run of 24 hours of 100% at the breast? or even 12 hours.

I think you are wise to maintian your oversupply until you have him 100% at the breast. It really sounds like you are on the right track.

Diapers are fine - but he's still getting a few bottles. His tongue is healing up normally, it could be a little sore still though because we have to stretch it. I don't know exactly why TT babies fall asleep at the breast but it's so weird, before it was clipped he might kinda sorta latch and he would instantly fall asleep. Not like normal breastfeeding sleepiness, it's different

Yup, that's what I do when his suck starts to change. He usually does pick back up, too.

I have been keeping track of everything for weeks with an app on my phone. Pumping length and amount, as well as bottle feedings and amount and recently breastfeeding sessions and length...and then I lost it all when my phone crashed last night. So at the moment, I'm not exactly sure. I know he was averaging 30oz a day on the bottle and I was averaging about 35oz pumped.

Every day we get more time at the breast. I bet he gets at least 12 hrs of the day to nurse already - last night overnight was about 7 hrs. He ate three times. Then most of the day he nursed on demand. He got maybe 4 bottles from midnight to midnight, if I remember right. Breast offered first and he prefers it. Since we are still working on the latch, my nipples aren't raw but sore, and MIL is here and likes to feed him, so that's why he had a few. It wasn't so much that he 'wanted' more, just that I needed a break.

I feel like we're doing really well, considering a week ago we were 100% on the bottle with no hope for ever latching.

It's possible because milk is made as it's demanded. Your breasts are factories, not storage units. Keep demanding, it'll keep coming.

I have a feeling its because him actually nursing has increased supply. You body knows now how to respond well to baby and the pump!

4 bottles in 24 hours and dipes are still good? Sweet! You are really close to 100% at the breast. Then you can start gradually weaning off the pumping.

Just wanted to say "wah-hoo!!!".   SOO glad to hear this, I'd been meaning to ask you how it was going.

How about a lactation center?   I know the one at our hospital has a scale just there for moms to use.    Why can't you go to the dr since you aren't vaxing?

One weight feed weigh won't tell you much... but it may serve to calm your fears a bit.

Also, you can wean from the bottles the same way you would formula, and just watch diapers.   You've got plenty of milk, clearly.... just want to make sure he's transferring enough.

We got fired for refusing to vax. I've got a new family doctor pending, but since he isn't a patient yet I don't have anywhere to take him for weight checks.

I know I am SO close and he is absolutely loving the boob. He got pissed at me earlier because I let daddy give him a bottle when he wanted to nurse! Ha! I kept telling him when he originally wasn't feeling the boob that if he would just give it a chance he would like it, lol!
