I was reading on internet (and noticed in some posts) thand wanted to ask something (sorry for loads of questions). I rfead that when a baby latches on and it hurts that means the latchthe baby isn't latched on properly. Correct? What about sensitive breasts? How can you tell between common breast pain and a bad latch? Before I was pregnant I have very sensitive breasts to where you touch them (or even brush the nipple a tad bit with water or clothing) it hurts. When I BF my dd it hurt to where I was grinding my teeth and clenching my fists every time but I didn't want to stop even if it hurt and almost had me in tears. Ill try to respond back. I'm at work.

That's not normal.  I would think that even if you have sensitive nipples, they would quickly become accustomed to breastfeeding.  I don't have any pain unless my LO clamps down or....dare I say it! THRUSH!  LOL...that's like torture.

I'd definitely get that latch checked out and any possible lip/tongue tie.

If the nipple is misshapened when baby is done nursing its not normal.  If its toe curling pain its not normal.  I was very sensitive though not as bad as yuo and LOST some sensitivity with nursing

That was when dd was newborn. I'm not nursing anymore. Was worried about next baby.

When nursing for the first time, there is some discomfort, as you get used to the feeling of someone trying to suck your boob off your body. :) But that goes away with time.

A pain, a REAL pain, that curls your toes and lasts either through the whole session or goes away after a few minutes but happens every time you nurse for more than two weeks or so (holy run-on sentence, Batman!) is NOT normal.

Maybe it didn't help that I was engorged at the time lol but before that it did hurt. She had a very..um..sucky mouth lol. The suction made me say "omg girl are you a baby or a vaccuum" lol

My daughter was a total barracuda when she was a newborn and got over the initial sleepiness from her jaundice. The initial latch hurt like hell, just like you described, toe curling teeth grinding pain. Then, one day, it just stopped. I haven't had any discomfort while nursing since then, except for when we had thrush, and then when she got chompy with new teeth.

1 mom liked this

girl, i always had very sensitive nipples. and i was afraid that when i started EBFing they would hurt even more.

trust me, you'll be able to tell the difference between the pain of not latching on properly to just having sensitive nipples.

my son (who's now 2 months) had a hard time latching on for the first 2 weeks of his life.

as a matter of fact i was just thinking about how my nipples don't even hurt anymore since i started using this special cream for mom's who are in situations like us.

it's called lanolin cream. the directions say to use it right after each breastfeeding.

the best part is you can leave it on and never have to worry about washing it off before the next feeding because it not toxic for the baby at all.

as a matter of fact, i don't think that he can even taste it.

i used it probably about 5 times and that was it, ever since then i didn't have any more pain.

=D
