am i doing this right??

ok so i'm a first time mom and i'm breastfeeding (yay). i don't have a pediatrician appointment until friday (stupid labor day, the dr's office was closed until today so i couldn't make an appointment sooner) so i have no idea how much weight my son has gained or lost since birth. he was born on the 30th so he's about 6 days old right now. at the hospital he lost just a couple of ounces before we left. his billiruben was only 6 and the docs had no concerns.

i had an awful time with engorgement on day 3 but it went down after about a day. now my milk seems to have come in and DS is attached to my boobs almost constantly, only stopping to sleep for a couple of hours here and there or to poop.

the problem i am having is that he is spitting up what i think is a lot. i'm probably just having new mom jitters but i wanted to make sure i'm not doing anything wrong here. i am not sure if i should call the doc and ask to be seen earlier or just wait until friday. he is pooping quite a bit as well. the poop is yellow and loose like the bf info i have says it should be. his spitup is white and liquidy, not projectile at all, just kinda dribbles out. he spits up after almost every feeding, he's not upset when he spits up, just kinda stares into space or looks a little uncomfortable.

sometimes the spit up doesn't happen directly after feeding. sometimes he'll have popped off for a nap, i get him settled and lay him down and about 30 minutes later here's a little puddle near his mouth on the co-sleeper.

is he just drinking too much? i don't have a pump, didn't see a reason to buy one since i am a stay at home mom. should i be doing something that i am not doing? i am still getting the hang of burping. i am offering both breasts and he takes both.

help?

Sounds like u r doing a great job!! How many diapers does he have in a 24 hr period? It should be one per day of life the 1st week, then at least 6. Poop and pee counts as 2. The extra spit up is prob just baby getting used to Ur milk coming in, its faster than the colostrum when it comes out. It might help to burp in between switching sides.
Good luck, and congrats!

My only suggestion is to try nursing leaning back in a reclined position with the baby on top of the breast instead of under it.

As long as he is still having poopy and pee diapers he's good! My son (who is now 2 months old) went through this big spit up thing too in the beginning. I had so many people tell me to switch him to formula but I never listened. He is doing great now! I think he just used to overfill himself. Plus the heat can cause it. Don't give up momma! Breast is best!!(:

Well the good news is he is getting some from u. If he wasn't he wouldn't be peeing! I bet he is just getting used to the milk. When u do go to the drs, please don't let him talk u into switching to formula, many drs do that.
U r doing great ! It will get better! :)

Spitup is only a problem if baby is hurting or losing weight/not putting out diapers. Keep feeding on demand and you can't go wrong.

Youre doing a great job! Don't worry too much, as long as baby is happy, gaining weight, and putting out diapers, he's great! Spit up is totally normal for most babies. For me, spitting up peaked right where you are now. My baby never spit up in the first week, but as soon as my milk came in she started spitting up a LOT. I think they get used to having to suck hard to get the colostrum, and when the milk comes in they get flooded those first few days until it regulates a bit. For us, it's gotten much better since then. It tapered off after a few weeks and it's much more manageable now, though she does still spit up. So basically, don't worry too much - it's annoying, but normal! If you're still worried you can talk to the doc about it, but I wouldn't change my appointment, if it was me.

demand has been non stop tonight and my so is so tired :( he cant sleep because if i let the baby go for even one minute so i can pee he is screaming. they told us no pacifier until a good bf relationship is estabished and to use pinky fingers instead. so if i have to step away, SO is stuck with a pinky in his mouth. then dh has pooped after every feed, and threw up when burped. i just wonder if he is ok with it all going through him
