feeding on demand

My son had some trouble gainging weight when he was born.  I was told when my son hit his birth weight to stop scheduling his feedings and to just feed on demand.  Well he hit his birth weight a week and a half ago and I have been trying to let him decide when he is hungry, but there are times when he will just sleep for hours and hours and I wonder at what point should I wake him to eat?

1 mom liked this

I never woke mine to eat unless my boobs were killing me and I needed to empty the load a little. But I also never really attempted a schedule, I just always went with them eating when they wanted to

What was the full weight history?
Provided the weight is no longer an issue you feed on demand whether thats 5 min or 5hrs.

My little one would sometimes sleep for 4 hrs during the day, plus she sleeps through the night. She is 10 weeks old tomorrow, but hasnt done the 4 hr sleep through the day in about a week.
As long as everything is going well with weight and u get enough wet/dirty nappies just go with it id say! Although personal preferance, i didnt let baby go longer than 6 hrs between feeds under 6wo
Good luck!

Is he being weighed on the same scale every time? Throw out any weights taken on a home or secondary scale. (Home scales are notorious for errors). Then re-publish.

I don't think you need to wake him, from the history.

I never woke my baby to feed.  I pumped and froze it to use later when making her food.  I mixed it in with her food instead of water when blending.  I figured out when she she was hungry and started feeding her at the same time every day.  Having a schedule is wonderful.

Oh, I meant to explain.  He had to go to the doctors that often because he was coombs positive and his bili got dangerously high.  So they just weighed him every time he went in, then when they noticed that his weight was not going back up they started making me come in to check his weight too

Those are all from his doctors office.  I considered getting a scale, but I know myself and how obsessive I can be and I knew I would probably end up weighing him after every feeding
