My son is 9 days old. This pic was taken in the hospital but this is how he nurses pretty much just on the nipples but I keep hearing this is wrong so how do I make him latch "the right way"?
Btw all my kids have nursed this way.

His mouth needs to be on the areola not on the tip of your nipple. Tickle his bottom lip with your nipple to get him to open wide then latch him. Are you in any discomfort?

It's getting less painful everyday. I try to put it in as far as I can but he ends up on the nipple. He doesn't open real wide.

Has he been checked for a tongue or lip tie?

I've checked he looks fine to me. Like I said both my other boys nursed the same way.

OMG my nipples hurt just looking at that.  He needs a nice open mouth with more breast tissue in his mouth.  That is a very shallow latch.  I would try and improve it.  You want to get him to open wider.  You may need to "sandwich" your breast a little to get more in there.  Are you giving it time before latch and waiting for a more open mouth from him?

Have to get him to open up wider, kind of tease him a bit before you let him latch on, or squeeze around your nipple and just kind of push it on in there.
