Prenatals are a good idea because breastfeeding takes more out of you.

Something is better than nothing, but should be taking a prenatal.

if you eat a very healthy diet of a wide variety of fresh, whole foods, especially vegetables and high-iron foods, then you dont even need vitamins, and the regular multi should be fine. if you are lacking in the nutrition department, i would really consider getting some high-end whole-food vitamins. mercola has some very good ones.

I wouldn't worry too much about running out and getting a prenatal to be honest.  Not all vitamins are created equal so in reality...your prenatal may not be as good as your daily.  Heck, many women do regular children's vitamins when pregnant or breastfeeding.  I'm currently taking a children's vitamin...just easy for me to do right now.

The vitamins are for YOU because the milk takes from your stores to give the baby everything that is needed. It doesn't really matter what vitamins you take as long as you don't have a deficiency and need more of something in particular.
