What's the rule with water and a nursing?

When is it ok to give water in a sippy cup? (And not have it displace bm calories?)
My twins go gaga over my water bottle, and one of them can actually drink through the straw already. I'm wondering if it's ok to let him do so... He's 8 months.
He also would eat/drink all day long if I let him so following his cues may not be the best plan...

A sip here and there is fine. Many moms give water with food to prevent constipation.

I gave them water in an open cup at six months old, or shortly after that when they started eating food. They nursed, drank and ate almost all on demand. The only rule was that they couldn't have food or a kid cup unless they had nursed first or they got pumped milk in a cup.

We start offering a sippy or regular cup of about 1oz of water when they start solids.
