My name is Jessica, I'm new to this group but a veteran to the disorder. I'm 25 and I've been pulling since I was 15. I've always pulled from places that weren't so obvious, usually around the hair line.
I usually part my hair in different spots, just depending on where I have more hair, at the time. However, since I've been pregnant with no job, all I seem to do is pull pull pull!! I've been trying to stop myself but, like usual, I don't stop completely. I bought some elastic type headbands to put around my hair line for when I'm at home, which has really helped! Anyways, my question to all of you is "What are some of the different ways, hairstyles you've had that seem to help hide the problem from others? I only trim my hair up about once every year or so (I don't usually trust hair stylists with cutting just a small amount of hair off). I'm running out of ways to part my hair, so just thought I'd see what you all do to hide it and still look good!
Thanks in advance for any input!

Hi,
I tend to pull at the crown the most. So, the only hair style I have worn for years is up in a clip to cover the top of my head. I did have a hairpiece specially made to wear but I only wear it when I am doing something special. But recently, I have begun to pull at the sides near my temples and ears. Time for me to wear a hat. I wish I could help you but I am not that creative with new styles.
Hi,
I have only been pulling for 14months. I started while I was pregnant with baby 4. I cut my hair often. Because it is so damaged. But like you, it is hard to trust them. I tell them my disorder, so they know I can only have certain styles. They never understand so, I just take risks. If it gets horrible, I will just get some add on's
If you go to a place like Sallys, you can find hair extensitions, you can also find hair that has a hook that goes on the very front of your hair. They are like 20-30 dollars.
I tend to, get the little hair clips, and twist on front og my hair and clip it back.
The add ons your talkin about for the front of the hair...are they just like extensions? I've never had extensions but I've been really thinkin about gettin some but I know nothing about 'em!
I know what you mean about telling the stylists about trich...They kinda look at you with a blank stare like they don't know what the hell you're talkin bout but they'll just pretend like they know!

I used to have my hair up in a pony tail all the time to hide my trich. Now I don't really care.. so I usually wear it down. One trick I use alot is just parting my hair differntly.. it works.
Also, when I was pregnant I pulled alot and it has only gotten worse since. I've heard some people say the same thing. I'm wondering if its a hormone thing..
Btw, I got some brochures about trich specifically for hair stylists. I got them from my support group, but she got them from Trichotillomania Learning Center. Trich.org
