is it to late to start canning tomatoes?

I am a newbie at canning. So new that i have NEVER canned before. I don't want to use the canned tomatoes anymore because the liners the cans use has BPA that leaches into the tomatoes. So canning my own is my only choice I suppose.

I haven't been to the local veggie market where they sell canning tomatoes. Is it too late a season for the toms? I am in Michigan.

It is not too late, but we are very close to the end.  I just canned 48 quarts of tomatoes on Friday.

Pick up your tomatoes ASAP and start canning!

hOw long did 48 quarts take? And how many tomatoes got you 48 quarts? I am either going to have such a small amount that I get 2 quarts, or so much I will be canning for a week and no place to put it all, lol.

Nope.  If they have tasty tomatoes at your farmers market, then they'll make tasty sauce or canned tomatoes.

I found that sometimes the "canning" tomatoes aren't the best ones.  Focus on lots of pump and fewer seeds.  Beefsteak actaully work really well.

I just canned some and it's super easy...see my blog:

I had approximately 4 bushels of tomatoes.  I threw a good 1/4 of them out because they rotted in the 4 days that it took me to get to them.  One half-bushel of them wasn't quite ready to can, so they were kept aside.  So, that's 2 1/2 bushels that gave me 48 quarts.  It took me 11 hours from start to finish, but I also did 5 loads of laundry, cooked lunch and dinner, and homeschooled 3 kids while working on the tomatoes.  Once my DH got home, he helped by boiling the tomatoes to peel them and taking the tomato garbage out.

It's certainly the end of the season, but I'd be surprised if you still couldn't find some. We have them here in the Pacific NW.

If you have trouble finding any, try this trick: I sometimes buy local tomatoes that never ripened and are still green. You can get them really cheap if you ask. Put them in the pantry and as they ripen, pop them in the freezer. When they are all red, you can can them.
