Average reading age for a child

My 4 1/2 year old is entering his second year of pre-school. He knows his ABC's and can indentify a few words, but does not know how to read yet. I find it difficult to read a book to him because he has no interest in books what-so-ever. I am concerned he will not read at the proper age.

Does your child know how to read? And if so, at what age? What do you think is the average reading age?

Do kindergarteners know how to read?

My daughter does not know how to read.  Our school told us in their district most kids read in kindergarten or 1st grade.

My daughter will be 4 in November and is not even close to reading. She doesn't even know all her letters.

My son will be 6 in October, he started reading around 4 to 4 1/2, but very easy things like "Mat sat on a hat" I consider him a very early reader, he is definatly ahead of his friends. He also has a personality where he loves to sit and read.

I wouldn't worry about it yet. I think knowing all the letters and numbers and recognizing a few words is a good place to be at starting kindergarten, but I know different school districts expect different things. I don't think it's typical to be reading before kindergarten.

most kindergarteners start without knowing how to read but they learn how in kg so there 5-6 yrs old i wouldn't make a big deal about it

I teach first grade and we do level readers.  When most  kids come into Kindergarten they don't have to read but have phonetic awareness which is most important.  As they got through Kindergaten they level up based on which ever system your school district uses. I teach for the catholic school so we use Basil system.  This helps us see where each kid lies and give them level appropriate books and help.  I wouldn't worry that they can't read now b/c they always catch up and by 3rd grade most read on the same level as a kid who read at 4.

My daughter will be 4 in November and she can read, and well.  I've been told by numerous people that know what they're talking about that she's gifted though, so don't feel like your child is "behind".  But if it bothers you that your son doesn't like reading, or if you are concerned about his reading, pick out books about something that he really likes.  Does he watch a fave tv show?  Get a book with those characters on it.  Just do whatever you can to peak his interest and get him into the books.

my son (who's 11) started reading in 1st grade and even that was hard because he was diagnosed with ADHD. reading...or homework in general was very hard because he would get so frustrated. my 4 yr; however; loves to read. my husband bought me a Nook for Xmas and the kids book talk to her and she can interact with it. she also knows her ABC's, 123's, colors, shapes and so forth...i'm starting with sight words so when she see it she will know but that's still a work in prgress. honestly i wouldn't rush it because you will become frustrated and upset and then the kids will too...i know, i did it with my son.

My son will be 4 in October and does not read at all.  he DOES know his ABC's, can count to 20, his colors, shapes, birthday, parents names, etc.  I am working on anything I think he may need to know before starting school and then will start with small sight words.  Your son is not behind at all.

Here they are expected to read by the end of kindergarten. It is super simple sentences such as, I see Sam. Sam is a man. He ran and ran.

I taught Kindergarten and can tell you that most kids couldn't read.  Out of  18 kids....one child could read at the start of the school year.  About 5 kids had very good letter recognition and could give me the sound for the most of the letters.  The rest didn't know letters or sounds......by the end of the year all children were reading on some level.  It's amazing how much they learn in a year.
