JENNIFER GORDON staff writer A man critically injured in a Sunday morning blaze has died. Daniel Risley, 26, was pronounced dead about 1 a.m. today at Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis, according to Pat Frederick with Frederick and Son Funeral Home, 313 Church St. City Fire Chief Mike Lankford said Risley suffered burns over a "substantial" portion of his body. Risley's girlfriend, 29-year-old Heather Stohler, a once accomplished international model, also died in the fire. Knox County Coroner Don Halter told fire officials she died from smoke inhalation. Fire officials ruled the fire that consumed the apartment the two shared at 604 Broadway St. as accidental, but an exact cause has not yet been released. Little light has been shed so far on the mystery surrounding why Stohler, formerly of Frankton, Ind., left international stardom to settle in small town Southern Indiana. Tim Allen, her cousin living in a small town just north of Anderson,, said up until a few years ago, Stohler had been traveling the world, modeling the latest designer fashions on the runways of Europe. She had appeared in Calvin Klein ads See FIRE, A7 with international supermodel Kate Moss and was represented by several modeling agencies, including Donald Trump Management in New York, Ford and Elite, according to an Internet profile. She appeared on the covers of German Marie Claire and Italian Vogue. But Allen said Stohler grew weary of the fast-paced life and decided to return to Indiana. She was adopted as a young child by an aunt and lived in Frankton before going away to modeling school. The aunt now lives in Florida, Allen said. Allen was unsure why Stohler was living in Vincennes but thought it possible Risley was either from or had family in this area. However, no one has come forward to the Sun-Commercial claiming to be one of Risley's relatives. An employee with the Sun-Commercial did, however, say Risley went to North Knox High School. Allen also didn't know if Stohler was working in Vincennes. He last spoke to her in December, and he said she seemed very happy. She is to be buried in Florida on Monday, he added. Firefighters first responded to the fire at about 8:45 a.m. and found flames coming from the apartment's windows. Fire officials estimated about $15,000 in damage and said no other apartments sustained any significant damage. |
