Celine Dion Is Surprisingly Frank About Whitney Houston’s Death

Posted by Lindsay Mannering

celine dionCeline Dion called into Good Morning America to discuss her memories of Whitney Houston, and how the "Greatest Love of All" singer was an inspiration to her. It seemed like Celine was coming from a good place, that she meant well and just wanted to share her grief with everyone else, but when she started talking about what killed Whitney, things went just a smidge too far.

Celine didn't say anything that most of us weren't already thinking, buuuuuut it was just a little surprising that she went on GMA to hypothesize about the cause of Whitney's death. She told Robin Roberts:

Whitney has been an amazing inspiration for me ... It's just really unfortunate that drugs, bad people or bad influence took over. It took over her dreams. It took over her love and motherhood. When you think about Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse, to get into drugs like that, for whatever reason. Is it because of the stress and bad influence? What happens when you have everything?

I don't think she's entirely out of line for implying that Whitney died of a drug overdose, Whitney's struggled with drug abuse for years, but I do think that it was an odd choice to do so on GMA. There's still so much to learn about what really happened to Whitney on Saturday night, and for Celine to make a comment like this, no matter how lovingly they were intended to be, seems a bit pre-mature.

It's one thing to huddle around the water cooler and talk about what you think Whitney died of, but it's another to use your celebrity status and access to say it on national TV. I don't think it's especially wrong of her, but there was something slightly off-putting about Celine's comments.

What do you think about Celine's remarks?

Her statement was the truth. Even if Whitney didnt die from drugs what Celine said is still true about her life: drugs ruined many things for her.

She said what I have been saying.  She just has a bigger soapbox then I do (at work and CM)...  I love Whitney though...Voice of an angel!

that comment was only part of what she said, I heard the whole thing on tv this morning and I do agree with this part of what she said, I even told my dh she sounded ridiculous and she rambled on and on about nothing saying the same thing over and over

People should just remember the " Artist" that Whitney was. How she blessed us with her gift. We as a people should always hold each other up and pray for each other. News and people always want to gloat on the bad or negative. All of us have done or said something that we are not proud of. She was a blessing that GOD allowed us to enjoy for awhile and when the trials of life get tooo bad for us and we ask Him for help, He comes and gets us. Every one is not strong, so we that are strong should hold up the weak ones. Remember that she left a daughter and how would we feel if it was one of us and people were doing it to us how would our children feel?????

I think she said out loud what everyone was thinking...so IF she didn't die because of drugs...I think more people will be surprised about that.
