MTV Cancels Buckwild After Death of Shain Gandee
The fate of Buckwild was left hanging after Shain was found dead April 1 in his vehicle, along with his uncle and a friend, while going off-roading or "mudding" in West Virginia. The cause of death was reported to be carbon monoxide poisoning, due to the car's tailpipe becoming covered with mud.
Production was immediately suspended following Gandee's death, and the unscripted series—which focused on "mudding" and partying—was in the middle of shooting the second season. A source confirms that MTV executives have decided not to move forward with producing any further episodes.
Buckwild averaged more than 3 million viewers in its first season and was one of the highest-rated shows on MTV.
