MTV has opted to cancel Buckwild in the wake of the death of one of its stars, Shain Gandee, a source close to the show confirms to E! News.

The fate of Buckwild was left hanging after Shain was found dead April 1 in his vehicle, along with his uncle and a friend, while going off-roading or "mudding" in West Virginia. The cause of death was reported to be carbon monoxide poisoning, due to the car's tailpipe becoming covered with mud.

Production was immediately suspended following Gandee's death, and the unscripted series—which focused on "mudding" and partying—was in the middle of shooting the second season. A source confirms that MTV executives have decided not to move forward with producing any further episodes.

Buckwild averaged more than 3 million viewers in its first season and was one of the highest-rated shows on MTV.

"Buckwild" star Shain Gandee will be remembered in a special set to air this Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. The network provided the following statement to MTV News:

"After careful consideration, MTV will not be moving forward with season two of 'Buckwild' in West Virginia. We love the cast and the show and this was not an easy decision, but given Shain's tragic passing and essential presence on the show, we felt it was not appropriate to continue without him. Instead, we are working on a meaningful way to pay tribute to his memory on our air and privately.

'Buckwild' Star Shain Gandee Dead At 21

On Sunday, we will be running a special, 'Buckwild: WV to the NYC,' which was shot before production had begun on season two. With the support of his parents, Dale and Loretta Gandee, we will run the tribute following a day of programming dedicated to Shain in which we will air the entire first season of 'Buckwild.'
"Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time for our family. We have truly felt all the love and know that Shain is resting peacefully. Shain was an incredible, outgoing and positive person who was loved by whoever he met. We are honored that we were able to let the world see what a wonderful son we had. He was the best son anyone could ask for. As we look to honor him in our lives every day moving forward, we are happy to share some of his last moments doing what he loved best: having fun and making people laugh," said Loretta Gandee.

The "WV to the NYC" special will also include footage shot with "Guy Code" stars Charlamagne and Lil Duval, who visited the cast of "Buckwild" back home in West Virginia and then took them around New York during their first group trip to the city. The special will cap off a marathon of the first season of "Buckwild," which will air beginning at 2 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday.

I'm glad they decided to cancel it. I never watched but with as many issues as the cast has had since it started it seems like this is for the best.
