i need some advice about too much tv with a 3 yr old!
my dd is watching way to much tv and is not active at all. and i know i can just take it away but she is so use to watching tv all day that it will be a hard transtion. so any advice on how to do this gradually??? how often does your kids watch???
You need to replace it with something else. You have allowed her to watch so much TV. You are the parent and have the responsibility to give her other things to do. She's 3 years old!
Shut the TV off and take her outside to play. Take her on a walk in the stroller. Sit on the floor with her and play a game. Sit at the table with her and color or some other activity. Read her a book.
If she is watching so much T.V. it obviously means that you aren't interacting with her at that time.
It may mean YOU have to do something with her. A 3 year old isn't going to just find something else to do on her own.
I mean, if this was a question of a teenager watching too much t.v. or something my answer might be different (it would still be to turn the t.v. off)
But you need to do more with her to replace the time she spends watching t.v.
There doesn't need to be a gradual transition...she will be HAPPY to have mommy doing something with her and playing instead of sitting like a zombie in front of cartoons.
ya usually she watches it while i am cleaning and running around cooking but it seems like all day. sometimes its just background noise while she plays but still

Our tv was turned to kids shows from the minute they woke up to the minute they went to bed...but lately I've noticed if I just shut it off, they don't even notice. One thing I've done a few times is to turn on music, kid appropriate music. Depending on what cable service you have, you may find one of the channels has a kids music channel. It's only the music, no videos. Other than that, you can engage her in an activity. I would almost bet she won't even notice if she's busy doing something next to mom. My kids, 2 and almost 4, love to help me with house work even. Anything to be with mom (cause I'm always here ANYWAY!!). good luck.
Use a timer - like one that you would use in the kitchen. Make a chart/calendar and tell her that when the timer goes off, the TV has to go off too and for every time you turn the TV off and she doesn't cry, whine or complain, you will give her a star on her chart/calendar. Arrange a reward system according to the stars (i.e. one star = 50 cents). At the end of the month, take her shopping with her "stars" and let her choose her reward. It will make the transition to less TV a lot easier.
~Good luck!
