So I could use a little advice as I start preparing for the day my baby is born and comes home. I am the owner of several cats and am looking to other mommy's out there who own cats for some advice on how to keep kitty out of the baby crib and bassinett. I love my kitties and finding them new homes is not an option. Please don't ridicule me for my decision to keep them. They were my life line at a few very bad points in my life and I have had them since they were babies (all now 7 or older).
I know I have time, but I am trying to get a jump on properly training my kitties as soon as possible to stay away from the baby sleeping areas. I know that 2 of them it won't be an issue because one is now 15 and pretty much sticks to the living room and kitchen as well as not doing much jumping around any more. The other is afraid of her own shadow and is also to over weight to consider high jumping worth her time. My concern are my other two kitties who are always looking for the most comfortable, warm, and new places to take naps. One of the two I'm not worried about scratching the baby because she has no front claws, the other does, but loves people and never scratches people no matter what you do. Believe me I've tried to push his buttons to see what would make him mad so I would know, and nothing, he just gives me a "mom, stop" look. LOL.
Thanks for your advice.
Here is a link to some good ideas.

I like the idea of putting balloons in the crib. If you set up the crib a couple months early they should be used to it being there with the balloons and will not go back.

i have 3 cats, at first when our son came home i let the cats sniff him and what not so that they could get used to him. Our sons crib was in our bed room so i would kick the cats out whenever he was sleeping in there. when he was 10 months old he got his own room so we continued what we were doing and would kick that cats our of his room when he was sleeping. For the most part my cats would sniff him but never really bothered him all that much we never had issues with them laying on him or trying to sleep with him. But something you could do is get a squirt gun or a mister and spray them when they are getting too close to the baby.
good luck!!!
oh yeah you can also get a cat net for the crib,it looks kinda like a misquito net.Ive never used one but i heard that they are great.

I wouldn't worry about your cats. They sell these mesh tent type things that hook onto the crib, and those will keep them out. It's like a big net you put over food when you're on a picnic?
I'd try my hardest to keep them away, but they will still be curious. After a few months, I wouldn't stress too much about it - babies sort of need to be exposed to those types of germs to be able to build up a tolerance to it IMO.
We have a dog and never had a problem with anything.

Happily married, college educated mother of 2 beautiful boys and one pretty princess. Formula and breastfeeding on demand, disposable diapering, cio, spoil my children rotten, dog-loving, Facebooking, tattoo loving, college educated, selective vaxing, pro-choice, and currently a stay at home mama, with morals and heart.
My bigger concern is the cat hair all over the crib and getting in the baby's face. I know having kitties the baby will be exposed to certain bacteria and such, just hair is tough to control and i would rather not have it in the crib if I can help it. My poor kitties are also not used to babies and baby noises so I may not even see much of my kitties when baby comes home and cries.
