"All black people, leave the store now" announcement at WalMart
Wal-Mart officials are looking at security tapes after an announcement was made for "all black people'' to leave a store in South Jersey.
A man used the public-address system at the Route 42 store in Washington Township Sunday night and calmly announced: "Attention Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now.''
Patricia Covington and Shelia Ellington were inside the store when it happened and told the Courier Post that customers and store employees looked stunned when they heard it.
"In 2010, I want to know why such statements are being made because it flies in the face of what we teach them [our kids] at home, and that's tolerance for people," said Ellington.
Ellington and other customers let store management and police know they were upset.
They asked the store to use the same announcement system to apologize to customers that night, which it did.
Wal-Mart management called the incident "unacceptable," and said it's working to make sure nothing like this happens at any other stores.
Washington Township police and the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office are investigating the incident as a possible bias crime.
"I can't believe it in this day and age," Covington told the paper. "Wal-Mart needs to be more responsible."
Covington and Elllington are boycotting the store.
I am not at all racist ..but for me...had I been there.. I wouldve giggled...which is what I do in akward situations =\ ..and then probably died of embaressement later had anyone heard me..but that is awful! I cant believe someone would do that...
I wonder if those announcement doohickeys are open to the public... I think I remember seeing random phones throughout our WalMart, but don't you need to know a code to punch in to use the PA system or something? Id' think so.... so I wonder if it was some idiot customer or if it really was some idiot worker....

I know when I used to work at walmart when I was 19, you just picked up the phone and pushed the PA button...here at our walmart they have phones all over the place and its the same way..

most walmarts have a code you punch in to make a announcement on the phones thru out the store. Who ever did it must have known the code like a employee or a former employee. I use to get agravated at my daughters (as teens) seeing a friend and taking off. I would find the closest phone pick it up and page them ex: Amber your mommy is waiting for you in the bra section!! LOL I know it is mean but walmart is huge here and as much as I need the exercise walking that thing more than once is over kill!!! LOL
