So my DH and I have decided that since we have the funds to be able to, we will be sending our boys to a private academy.
I dont at all see anything wrong with public school, seeing as though I went to public school all my life and even a community college.
But he however has strong feelings towards sending them to private.
I havent looked into the benefits of a private school versus a public school.. But what are your thoughts??
We have done private and public before. When we lived in Italy, we did private of course, An American International school. When the public was good, we went with it, when it wasn't we removed them and put them in private. We move a lot so they have attended school in different states. We are in Wisconsin now with great schools. My oldest went 9-12th grade here. My youngest so far has gone 6th-10th grade and will graduate here from public school. We have the money to send to private but have only done it when we felt it was needed. We took my youngest out of pubic in Georgia for 3rd-5th grade. The public schools were fine for our oldest, not for the youngest.
We homeschool. However, if I was going to send my kids to school, I would send them to a private school before a public school. Good luck with your journey.
Welcoming our 6th baby, 3rd home birth and 1st unassisted birth on 2-10-10.

We use a private school. It is a severe disapointment and a lot of money. Our private school has fantastic curriculum and standards. They just don't provide on the ground tools and teachers to help most of the kids actually achieve the standards. Conversely a common complaint of public education is that the standards are set too low...
You can do a lot of research and you should. Mostly what I have found is that privately schooled children are no more likely to graduate college than publicly schooled children. Parental involvement is everything. If you are involved in your kids education and help them meet their goals they will be successful regardless of the venue used to achieve their success.
One of my sons has special needs that are better addressed through the public school right now... We chose an area that had great schools for that reason, and we are really happy with the services he is getting. Although DH is military, and is going pilot so chances are high we'll get sent to the middle of nowhere, and its going to be difficult moving around always finding schools that will have the services he needs. We will definitely look at private schools as an option if we need to.

Will you have access to DODDS schools?
I would never send my child to a private school. I don't want them brainwashed to believe in god, and since most private schools are religious, they won't be attending them. But that is just me, I think if you actually believe what they preach, a private school is a good way to go.
I guess we will at some point, but our boys are in first grade so this is the only area they have gone to school in so far. I really don't know much about the DODD schools, but I guess I will have to look into them more when we get moved around again.

I agree to weigh your options. Our HS here is so great. Over 90 classes to choose from 20 AP classes to choose from, lots of opportunities for clubs and sports, great reputation, not huge classes even though the school has 2400 kids. I couldn't see spending $20,000-$30,000 a year for another school that may not offer half of what our public school offers. A couple neighbors do though.

I'd check them out. I have personal inside experience with a DoDD school that was wonderful! Their programs for special needs were outstanding and just by virtue of being on a base their class sizes were very reasonable. The pay is great and the benefits are fantastic so the teaching pool is very competitive and they tend to get only the 'best and brightest' teachers. Although I guess a downside is those teachers tend to work until retirement so if there is a mediocre one they are around forever...
Anyhow--just thought I'd mention it. DoDD has all levels of schooling.
