Needless. Every month we have a local story of co sleeping deaths. Its so sad and preventable.
MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's office says that a
one-month-old girl died after her mother accidentally suffocated her
during what they describe as a "co-sleeping event."
The girl, Lilly, passed away at the hospital on February 4th.
According to a medical examiner's report, on the morning of January
10th, the father saw the baby's mother nursing the infant that morning
with pillows propped up behind her back.
The report says that about 30 minutes later, the baby's father found
Lilly "face down on the bed. The infant was between the mother's arm
and her leg, but (the mother) was not on top of the infant."
A Milwaukee police detective talked to the mother, and she apparently
told him "she did not remember the incident that morning at all."
The baby's mother also apparently told police that she "had not been getting any sleep."
Lilly's father told the Medical Examiner's office that the family "do not practice co-sleeping

There's a difference between choosing to co-sleep safely and being so tired that you fall asleep with the baby. The latter isn't safe. Babies have died when their mothers were sitting in a chair feeding them and falling asleep, too.
Quoting atlmom2:Co sleeping, not co sleeping. Many Mom's breast feed in bed just like this Mom did. Why not sit up in a chair? Too lazy to get out of bed?
This is why I would never co-sleep, especially when they are newborn/infants. My children sleep in a pack and play next to me for about 4 weeks and then go into their own bedroom in their crib. I would never be able to forgive myself if they died in my bed no matter what the cause. If (God forbid) they died in their crib I think I would be able to handle it better. I hope I never have to find out.
If the baby is in your bed and you are sleeping you are co-sleeping. I don't know why anyone would say otherwise. I don't care if it's done once or everynight, it's co-sleeping. A lot of Drs and hospitals do not recommend it.
In Nov when I had Lou the nurses came in and took him and put him in the cradle next to me if I was nodding out or needed rest. They were very very strict about it and I liked it.
I have successfully co-slept & nursed 4 kids now without so much as a scare. It is unfortunate that this happened but if she was that tired it could have happened anyway.
IF that baby was in a crib and not being fed while laying down, I would bet money that baby would still be alive. It is really sad, and could have been prevented.

I have also co slept with both my kids and haven't even had a scare. I also breastfeed while in bed. Sometimes people are irresponsible or don't take any precaution.
