How do you get fruit into your kid’s diet while eating out?
We gave 5 CafeMom members a $25.00 gift card from McDonald's and asked them to try the new and improved Happy Meal featuring apple slices and mini-fries. With the new Happy Meal, McDonald's is supporting parents in encouraging their children to enjoy the foods that are good for them along with the foods they love by automatically including both apples and fries as part of a balanced, kid-appropriate meal.
Tell us about your kids. How do you get fruit into their diet while eating out?

Here are some great responses from our CafeMoms!
"The minifries were cute - kids ate everything up! Not one crumb left." -loriec
"I was excited to see that McDonald's offered apples with their Happy Meals. It would really help busy moms add some more fruit into their children's diet!" -erikays
By ordering it! I usually order a fruit cup or some melon on the side. Also, if you ask the waitress to bring the fruit medley first, before the entree, the kids will fill up on fruit, stay occupied while waiting for dinner, and eat less of the fries that comes with their dinner!
It's never been a problem! Ever since they've had Apple Dippers, my kids have wanted those! haha
I wish I'd been selected! BUMMER!
depends on where we go..
most place include a vegetable as a side in most restuarants around dinner time.
but looking at larger chains:
Dennys: they offer a choice of side, from veggies, to mac and cheese, to grapes, etc. I let my kid decide what she wants, however if she for example, chooses the mac and cheese side, I make sure my plate includes a veggie as well, and we share.
But really, it's up to the parents to help their kids choose wisely. A lot of times appetizers are great ways to add fruits or veggies to a meal as a starter snack. But you can look into deserts as well if the appetizers and entrees are unsatisfying.. for example some diners offer apple pie or other fruit like pies for desert, or icecream with fruit if that's the ONLY way to get fruit or into them.
When we go out, we stick to places that offer fresh fruit and we avoid the kids' menu, unless fresh fruit is offered and they have a decent selection like grilled chicken and salad.
I always feed ds the fruit or vegetable first. If I give him mashed potatoes or the entree first he wont eat the veggies or fruit. I don't know if I like those apples from McDonalds because they sat out all day and never turned brown! I try to avoid fast food as much as I can.
