Long articles and posts discourage me from reading even part let alone the entire thing :)
eh...sometimes. If its a current or relevant news article I usually read them. If it's somebody's loooooooong drawn out tale of the problem of the day, I tend to lose interest. Just state your problem succinctly and I'll see if I have something helpful to offer.
I read only what tweaks my interest, or if I see a post that someone took time to write and there are no comments. I stop by that one and say something simple like thanks for sharing, or I'm sorry, or hope things get better. Sometimes I don't have words to help so I bypass the post.
If it intrests me....I read it....If it does not....I dont...

Define 'long'...
I see posts all the time that are a paragraph or so and then a huge apology for such a long post. don't bother me. My confession is I won't even OPEN certain topics or topics posted by certain members...
