111-Year-Old Recalls Early Days Of Girl Scouts

An 111-year-old New Bedford woman is celebrating being one of the oldest Girl Scouts alive as the group marks its 100th birthday.

Amelia "Milly" England joined the Thistle Troop in 1914 and says she still considers herself a Girl Scout.One of her most prized possessions include her gold Girl Scout ring with its emerald gemstone, which also happens to be her birthstone.England recalls sewing her own uniform — a long-sleeved blouse with a blue neck scarf — that she wore on camping trips and to troop meetings, dances and suppers at a local church.England says the Girl Scouts gave her somewhere to belong when she moved with her family from England more than a century ago.Her niece said England met Girl Scouts of the USA founder Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low during the nascent years of the organization, which Low started in Savannah, Ga., in 1912 so girls could build character, learn skills and have an outlet to simply have fun.England has bold advise for today's Girl Scouts, s
