i would take a sample in if you can. i would say go with something light- however on that night- i have light color carpet and hate it!!!  you can see where everyone walks through.  maybe something multi color light but not to light.

Do a neutral, but think about a textured carpet!  I just had our stairs re-carpeted in a cream color and it has this beautiful, swirled texture in it.  Love it!

Don't do anything dark. Trust me you will regret it. We have navy blue carpet in our living room. It was here when we moved in and we've slowly been replacing the crap. But it shows EVERY piece of lint, dust ball...you name it. You'll be vacuuming at least 4 times a day because it will drive you batty. lol!
