Daylight Saving Time 2013: When Do We Set Our Clocks Ahead?

by Jeanne Sager

ClockMy fellow Americans, the day we have all been waiting for is almost here! Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend! You know what this means? Spring is almost here, and it's dragging the afternoon sun along with it! Oh yeah, and it's time to change your clocks.

Already having dreams of sitting out on the porch watching the fireflies? Here's everything you need to know about the hap, hap, happiest time of the year! Er, I mean, Daylight Saving Time ...

1. It starts Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. So set your clocks ahead on hour on Saturday night, or you'll be 50 shades of confused when you get up and try to watch your favorite 8 a.m. news show.

2. We're losing an hour. OK, OK, this is the part that no one likes. We lose out on an hour of sleep on Sunday morning. But hello, an extra hour of sunshine at night ... so worth it!

3. Daylight Saving Time doesn't apply everywhere. Live in Arizona or Hawaii? How about Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, or American Samoa? You don't have to worry about changing your clocks, because these are the spots around the America that don't participate in DST. They get that extra hour of sleep ... but it makes  the eight months a little more confusing. It's hard enough keeping track of the time change when you're calling out of state, now we have to add this into the mix!

4. It will last for eight months. Personally, I'm one of those "can't it be DST all year long" folks, but we've only got until November 3. So make it last!

5. It's Daylight Saving Time. Got that? Not Daylight "SAVINGS" Time. Make sure you drop that "s" ... or you'll bring out the grammar police.

6. It's a good time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms. It's not necessary, but the safety experts have tried to make these two practices go hand in hand so people don't forget that those batteries CAN expire ... and that could be deadly.

Are you ready to change your clocks? What are you looking forward to about DST?

I think it should be year round; but, then it would be really, really dark early in the winter. So, I think that I am extremely happy with the fact that we get more daylight later in the day :)

We lose an hour, but it shifts the hour that children wake up to an hour later.  Hopefully, my girls will continue to go to bed at about the same tiem but sleep an hour later.  (Getting an extra hour in Nov. doesn't make a difference when kids wake up at the same time not matter what the clocks say.)

I am looking forward to having sunlight later into the evenings again and to the warmer weather that DST brings with it. I just hope Mother Nature gets the memo and realizes that we're supposed to stop having snow now.
