Are we symbolised by the ring that we are married?

"When we wear our wedding rings we are married the moment we put them off we cease to be!" said a friend of mine last week.
What do you say about it?

The piece of paper says otherwise. Until you file another piece of paper stating you're no longer married, You are married. Ring or not.

I think that's a bit much. The rings are symbolic of marriage. However, as long as you carry yourself and conduct yourself like a married person, then you will be, regardless of rings.
