First family outrageous cost of their African vacation

Posted by Anonymous   + Show Post
Record cost between 60 and 100 million for a VACATION. Just crazy in our economic times. Oh, they they won't do a safari because that would add to the cost. Nice of them, (sarcasm)

First off, the reported cost could be $60 - $100 million.  It is not a definite $100 million.

Seondly, $42 million in 1998 equates to about $59.78 milliom today.  So the estimate is not that off.

Quoting Anonymous:

Clintons was 42 mil. Huge difference between 100 mil and 42 mil. That isn't similar at all. We don't have 40 mil to spare.

Quoting nova.mommy:

The Washington Post story didn’t say that Obama’s trip will cost $100 million, but that the trip could cost $60-100 million, and that the cost was based on similar African trips made in recent years, “Obama’s trip could cost the federal government $60 million to $100 million based on the costs of similar African trips in recent years, according to one person familiar with the journey, who was not authorized to speak for attribution.”

President Obama hasn’t made any trips to Africa, except a 22 hour stopover in Ghana in 2009, so it is pretty clear that Secret Service is basing their cost estimate on the cost of the Bush trips. Since George W. Bush made two presidential trips to Africa, it is likely that he spent more money in today’s dollars as President Obama will on his trip.

The reality is that presidential trips are expensive. It would be fair to be opposed to all of them, but the hypocrisy of only being outraged when certain presidents travel is unacceptable. George W. Bush appears to have had himself quite a little African spending spree, but apparently cost only matters when Barack Obama is the president who is doing the traveling.

from Washington Post

Among the 56 vehicles for the trip are parade limousines for the president and first lady, a specialized communications vehicle for secure telephone and video connections, a truck that jams radio frequencies around the presidential motorcade, a fully loaded ambulance that can handle biological or chemical contaminants and a truck for X-ray equipment.

The Secret Service transports such vehicles, along with bulletproof glass, on most trips, including those inside the United States, White House officials said. But with quick stops in three countries, the agency will need three sets of each, because there is not enough time to transfer the equipment, according to the planning document.

One hundred agents are needed as “post-standers” — to man security checkpoints and borders around the president — in each of the first three cities he visits. Sixty-five are needed to meet up with Obama in Dar es Salaam. Before the safari in Mikumi National Park was canceled last week, an additional 35 post-standers had been slated to protect the Obamas and their two daughters there, according to the document.

The bottom line is he shouldn't be spending a dime till the sequester is over and he cuts spending overall.

NO, this is more of a story because those that don't like this particular president choose to make it so. The debt is not that much of a problem according to many economists and a very large part of it was created when President Bush insisted on waging two wars and providing a Medicare drug benefit, among other things, "off the books" as it were while simultaneously lowering taxes. As to the sequester, well I don't like it very much either, it is like using a chain saw for brain surgery, but with the Congress seemingly unable to accomplish anything to address the situation it is that with which we are, not very surprisingly stuck.

The cost of such trips, especially to an area with conditions such as will be faced in Africa, are extreme, no doubt about it. The ever increasing need for additional security in a world that becomes more violent and insecure combined with ever increasing costs drives up the bill for such travel. While it is sad to have to spend that kind of money such trips are part of the president's job and have been for a long time. While it is never inappropriate to discuss such issues it is patently unfair to single out this president based on partisan politics.

Quoting Anonymous:

The other presidents didn't spend like this one and have us so much more in debt and didn't have a sequester also.  That is why this is more of a news story than ever before plus him spending so much more on this trip than others too.  It is all that combined.

Quoting GaleJ:

While these kind of numbers are staggeringly high the idea of our president taking such trips is well established and the presidents from both parties have done it. I may not like the costs but accept them as a very necessary evil to protect our president and our first family as they travel representing our country to the rest of the world.

While I don't disagree about the sequester(IMO congress should have to take a pay cut too, like that would happen, they changed the rules about air-traffic controllers after they realized it would be tougher/less safe for them to go home).  I was commenting on your comment that it was huge differance from Clinton's trip cost.

maybe I should have elaborated.....his heritage is Kenyan-American. Kennedy went to Ireland and no one complained, I don't know how many European American presidents have visited the countries of their heritage. So it costs more in our current spending to go to Africa. Does that mean he shouldn't visit the land of His forefathers and teach his children about their history?

What does a black president have to do with anything here????????

Quoting DebnDrew:

please include the cost figures of previously 1st family vacations so we know it isn't just a rant from a bitter right wing nutjob who hates having a black first family that spends family time together.

our state legislature went into overtime for one day and it cost taxpayers more than 77,000......just for the DAY, and the reason nothing got accomplished is because the republican side shot down every agreement and basically refused to contribute.

again, you are quoting figures only from Democrats.......and not the cost to income ratios that are current in the defecit spending model. You can't look at a president from 12 years ago during an entirely different economic climate and debt percentage spending and have it relate with any validity to the current president.

I am amused that someone who is so politically affronted has to hide behind anonymity....or are you remaining anonymous because you really don't have a grasp on political spending as a whole and are just bitching because you don't get a vacation (same as the rest of us). Begrudging his family a vacationdue to your economic problems is petty.......when the old white haired farts begin contributing to the solution of the sequester, I will be more willing to see you as a victim and less of a complainer.

Quoting Anonymous:

It says Clinton spent over $40 mil. If Mickey Mouse was president it would be horrible to spend $60 mil on a vacation especially with the sequester.

I think it is awesome to visit countries of heritage. On your own dime after you are out of office. We visited Italy on our own dime too. Awesome trip.

Business is different. Vacation and business trips are apples and oranges. Business is paid for. Vacation the normal human being pays for out of their pocket.

GW was not so exaggerated with the spending.  There is not a problem the president has a vacation.  The problem is the exaggerated cost - especially since we don't have the money and are borrowing so much money from China.  Hope they don't come anytime soon to collect, or we may be run by Chinese.
