Old fashioned.  Chores, simple age-appropriate rules, and consequences.  Lots of freedom to run and play.  Do you chores, do your school-work, and have fun.  Little to no TV.  You intentionally and defiantly step over the line, the results were not pleasant.  We were parents, not buddies.  AS you got older, and showed you were more responsible, your boundaries widened.  You screwed that up, the boundaries shrank.  Essentially, we knew it was our job to prepare our children for life in the real world.  By the time they left home, they knew how to take care of themselves - even when bad times hit - because they had been a part of a family that soldiered through some really rough spots together.  It gave them confidence in themselves, and knew they didn't need outside help in order to survive.  But most of all, they are happy.

You want to give your child the very best start in life so they can be successful. You only get one try -- no do-overs -- and thanks to you, your kids have the very best the world has to offer.
