Foodbank and expired foods

i don't believe expiration dates on dry and canned goods need to be followed. Most of the dates say "best by" so the item may be a bit stale, but especially things like dry soup mixes, pasta noodles, canned goods, granola bars- we all know the food doesn't magically expire on the date.

So a lot of my items are expired from July 2013 and 2014. Obviously if my family hasn't eaten it by now they aren't going to.

it is a shame to throw this stuff out. Wouldn't a food bank want to give it to someone that has nothing rather than throw it out?

In 3 states I've lived they won't accept expired food.
CNned food expires for a reason and has a LONG shelf life. I'd just toss it.

You want to give food that has been expired 1-2 years to a food bank?

There are some people that have no food. I would think when you are literally starving that you would appreciate something vs nothing.

Because giving them food that is not safe to eat is wonderful.

Stop acting like a saint your just trying to make yourself feel better about the waste your family accumulated

I don't think they do accept expired food items. I can't remember how it works but there is a best before date and eat before date which as I recall may have different rules.

Dang...I can't remember but something like that.

Sadly, you will need to throw it out.

I can understand if it's maybe expired within the last month, depending on the food. When you're talking about something that expired a year or longer, no, toss it in the trash.

Gross, if you won't eat it, why would anyone else? Mixes esp gluten free or flours, etc actually smell and go bad.

Donate it anyway and it's their call whether they toss it or not.
