my 4 month old has a slight fever 99.8 right now and has has it on and off for about three days, he is more fussy then normal and has a stuffy nose.  i have given him infant tylonel to bring down his tempeture, i was just wondering if this is some thing i need to take him in for, his doctors office is closed today so i would have to take him in to the ER, so any advice would be welcome. i am a first time mom so please dont bash.

Update- He fell asleep in my arms a little bit ago and is now sleeping soundly in his crib!!!!! yay!!!!

Could he be getting a tooth?

Well the fever is pretty low grade even if it is on and off.  If it gets 103. or higher I would call the doctor.  Lots of fluid, call your doctor, I am sure they have an answering service and they can tell you what to do.  It might be viral.  If you are worried try your doctors calling service before you go to the ER, if it is viral, that is the last place you would want to take your baby, full of germs. You can't do anything if it is viral.  If you notice lethargic behavior call right away. Sorry I hope this helps and good luck!

They dont consider it a fever until 100.4. I would give him a luke warm bath and some infants tylenol that should bring the fever down a little. Keep an eye on him and if it spikes up too high go to the ER if you cant reach your doctor. Make sure you call the office whenever they are open again. GL

personally, I wouldnt take him unless it went to above 100*. BUT if it's been going on for a few days you might want to call in the morning or see if your peds office has an on call nurse to ask. Don't worry about being bashed, even some of us mom's with multiple kids still don't know when to call. good luck and I hope your LO feels better soon.

I don't judge you for doing it, it's just not for us.

I've gone through this with both my girls at one time or another.  The only time I really worried is if it went over 100 and I couldn't break it.  If you are able to get it to go down with tepid baths, cool cloths and Tylenol I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Also, as long as he's not vomiting or having diarrhea and he's not listless then it shouldn't be a problem.  Fevers are a good thing, they show/tell you that your body is fighting off whatever is invading it.  Make him as comfortable as you can and make sure he's getting plenty of fluids.  If it eases your mind you can call your doctors office or an after hours clinic and speak to them about it.  It's okay mama, don't panic.

If he has stuffy nose  it might be that he is getting a cold.

thing is with babies that little and the few symptoms he has it could be alot of things, a tooth, a cold, allergies, start of something serious like an ear infection. personally id take the wait and see approach and if it goes to high then take them in. the fever is pretty low grade and fussyness well babies get fussy. i dont see the er being very helpful honestly. but thats just me. id wait and see and keep tylenol goin to keep it a  low fever and if u cant break it by monday or even if it goes to high like i believe its 103 they want u to take them in.  good luck and its ok to be unsure sometimes!
