....but this so sickens me. I can't even begin to understand why anyone would have a python, pitt bull etc. when they have children.  Now before you start bashing, I do realize that the odds of a python getting out and strangling a baby, or a loving pitt bull (or any other dog) viciously attacking, are slim. I understand that NOT ALL of them are like that, but what bothers me is that you just can not know for sure.  And why would anyone even take that chance?  Don't our children's lives and safety mean more to us than a pet?  If not, shouldn't they??  So sad...

***EDIT***  For those of you giving utterly ridiculous answers.... I am not saying nobody should have pets. I'm not even saying you shouldn't have dogs or snakes!  I'm saying, why a dog that's KNOWN for it's vicious behaviour? Why a snake that's capable of squeezing the life out of your child?

And yes I know there are potential dangers around every corner and even in our own homes, but that doesn't mean we add to them. We don't let our kids play with matches just because there's a chance the house could burn down anyway. We don't let our children play with guns just because there's a chance of somebody breaking in and shooting us anyway. We don't invite a child molester to stay the night with us just because there's a chance of them being molested at some point in their lives anyway.  Shall I go on?  How fricken dumb!

Public school teachers are not responsible for the education of our children. As parents, we delegate that responsibility to them. I choose to have the sole responsibility of the upbringing, wellbeing and education of my child.                      ~I'm proud to be a homeschooling mama!~

  • I didnt think that i was being ridiculous in what i replied.. I mean you keep saying "why make that choice and take that chance?"

Its the same darn thing.. why make that choice and take the chance of putting your baby in a car and taking the chance of getting hit?

Lets just live in a bubble the rest of our lives, shall we?

(And just to add- I hate snakes.. they give me the heebee jeebies.. LOL)

  • pets are a wonderful thing to add to a child's life.  it teaches them compassion, responsibility, and unconditional love.
if you are going to add a pet to your household...do it responsibly, intelligently, and thoughtfully.  if a parent isn't willing to do the research, keep up the care, and be vigilant about responsible pet ownership they should not have a pet.  ANY pet. period. and IF they get an animal and neglect to fulfill all their responsibilities and that animal gets hurt or hurts someone then its on THEM - NOT the animal - regardless of BREED -the animal cannot be blamed for its owners neglect/abuse/irresponsibility.

  • Hard to understand what goes through their mind when they bring a dangerous animal into the home!!!

  • I totally agree with you.  I know exactly what you are saying.  If they would have been more responsible that wouldn't have happened.  Like we had a black lab that was vicious and we had to get rid of her (we gave her to a friend) because she tried to attack the baby while he was in his walker.  Now I don't care what anyone has to say "oh- you throw away pets" or "oh you couldve taken it to classes" or whatever I dont care.  I am not gonna put my kid in harms way.  just like if they were gonn ahve a python, at least keep the tank locked so there was no possiblilty of the animal escaping.

  • wow. read all the responses. sometimes we should be ashamed for the way we talk to others... even if it is over the internet. respect should go BOTH ways.

i just have to say this... i had pets growing up. i loved them dearly, but there will be no dogs, cats, snakes, or any other creature in my house now that i have a family of my own... they're all outside. see we live on a farm. we have cattle, sheep, and pigs. my sister-in-law is 16 years old and she shows cattle. my husband, 2 year old dd and i go with her to the shows. we work with those cows day in and day out so that they are calm, but we all know that, like dogs, they can have a mind of their own.

i honestly think that the key to having pets (or animals like we do) is working with them, loving them, respecting them, and being careful around them. when my daughter is old enough, she'll show 2500 pound bulls and i realize the risks. but honestly, whether you have pets or farm animals, they can be a great way to teach children responsibility. as a parent you have to protect your child, but you also have to let them live a little too...

so i guess what i'm trying to say is that while i won't be owning a pitbull, snake, or anything of that sort, i don't judge others that do. i just hope that they have enough common sense to not endanger themselves, their children, or anyone else.

  • Because it's not the same thing. I'm not saying to live in a bubble.  Let me put it this way...  Say you're looking for a new car and one particular model was known to be somewhat undependable. And once, had even blown up for no apparent reason, killing it's passengers.  But sitting next to it was one that passed all the safety tests, was known for it's dependability and most importantly, had never blown up and killed it's passengers. Which would you choose for you and your family? You're still getting a car. You're still going to be driving on the road where there's a chance you could get in an accident and be killed, but are you at least driving the safer, more dependable car?

Silly scenario, I know. But you get the idea.......I hope  :)

  • animals and cars are different.  an animal behaves in reaction to the way it is cared for.  If you have a snake and its in a cage and you dont LOCK the cage then its NOT the animals fault....its the persons fault... the snake is not a DANGER....the owner is IRRESPONSIBLE.

a car and a pet cannot be compared.... animals dont "malfunction".  they are either SICK and that causes erratic behavior - and a RESPONSIBLE owner would know that by taking them to regular vet visits..... or the erratic/aggressive/"bad" behavior is a result of BAD OWNERSHIP

  • Here are the choices those parents should have made:  get the legal papers necessary to house a snake of that size,  think long and hard about having an 8 foot snake in the house with small children, feed the snake responsibly, house the snake in an appropriate tank that he cannot get out of.

  • If you really want to look at it that way, ANYTHING can be dangerous. ANY animal can bite and harm a child, even the usual cute and cuddly ones. My boyfriend had his foot bitten through by a dachsund when he was little. My friend had a hamster she couldn't hold because the thing was vicious and attacked anyone/anything put into the cage. I suppose if you want to play on the safe side, get some goldfish, put them in a plexiglass tank built into the wall, close your blinds, and protect yourself from the world in a bomb shelter.
